American feminists have been curiously quiet about this. Isn’t this the real patriarchy?
Axios reports:
New Taliban-appointed chancellor bans women from Kabul UniversityThe Taliban-appointed new chancellor of Kabul University announced Monday that women are now barred from teaching or studying at the institution. Why it matters: It’s the latest encroachment on women’s rights in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power last month — despite the interim all-male government’s assurances that it’d be more inclusive than when it last ruled in 1996-2001.
- Under the Taliban’s strict interpretation of Muslim law, women and girls back then were banned from education and work. And women were only allowed out in public if accompanied by a male family member. Many were punished if they disobeyed.
What they’re saying: “I give you my words as chancellor of Kabul University,” tweeted new Kabul University chancellor Mohammad Ashraf Ghairat. “As long as a real Islamic environment is not provided for all, women will not be allowed to come to universities or work. Islam first.”
