There was a political earthquake in California this week. The former Democratic majority leader for the California state Senate, Gloria Romero, endorsed Republican gubernatorial recall candidate Larry Elder over current Governor Gavin Newsom in a campaign video.
“Our public schools need big change. I’m Gloria Romero; I was the majority leader of Democrats in the state Senate. I believe in charter schools and and school choice. So does Larry Elder – but not Gavin Newsom. He shut our public schools while he sent his kids to private schools,” Romero says in a video released by the Elder campaign.”Yes: I’m a Democrat. But the recall of Newsom is not about political party. It’s about Newsom. Larry Elder for governor,” she adds.Romero served as the Democratic majority leader in the state Senate from 2001 until 2008, when she stepped down to become chairman of the Education Committee.Elder currently leads the pack of Republican candidates looking to replace Gov. Newsom in the Sept. 14 recall election.
As I noted in my previous posts about the recall, Californian parents are furious at the politics of COVID-19 impacting their children’s education and the rank double-standards that Newsom and his cronies employ. The only question is whether there are enough upset and engaged parents to oust Newsom.
There have also been other interesting developments in the recall election. To begin with, Kamala Harris has cancelled her slated campaign trip to California to support Newsom.
Harris, a former senator from California who served as San Francisco’s district attorney when Newsom was the city’s mayor, had planned to campaign for the governor, a fellow Democrat, on Friday on her way back from a trip to Asia, but will instead return to Washington, her spokesperson said.
However, Biden is still planning to join Newsom in California for some campaign events.
….Biden plans on stumping for California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom ahead of next month’s vote on whether to recall him from office, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Wednesday.Though Psaki did not give a date for when Biden might travel to the Golden State, she said an appearance by Biden to support Newsom was “still certainly his plan” despite the unfolding crisis in Afghanistan, as well as the ongoing illegal immigration crisis playing out on California’s doorstep since Biden took office….Democratic activists have expressed concern about polls forecasting a close result on the question of whether to keep Newsom as governor or force him out of office. The intervention of both Biden and Harris signifies that the White House is taking those warnings seriously.
I suspect that the California voters are not going to be persuaded to vote for Newsom based solely on Biden’s ability to make sensible, cognizant, and winning decisions.
