U.S. Women’s Soccer Takes a Protest Knee, Gets Trounced by Sweden

The U.S. women’s soccer team went into the Olympics as the favorite. They’ve been untouchable for a long time with a 44 game winning streak.

The ladies ramped up their protesting against the U.S. and begging for money. The left thrust the players into the spotlight, especially Megan Rapinoe. She has since become a spokesperson for Subway and a face of Victoria’s Secret.

Athletes can protest before games, but social media teams cannot show videos or pictures of teams or athletes taking a knee.

The U.S. women’s soccer team knelt for the national anthem before their game against Sweden, their first Olympic match:

At the USA-Sweden game in an empty Tokyo Stadium, at the sound of the referee’s whistle, all 11 starters from both teams, plus the ref, dropped to one knee. They stayed there for about 10 seconds with pregame music still playing in the background. They then rose, and a short in-stadium countdown to kickoff commenced.

Sweden joined the American women: “For us it really feels right to stand up for human rights. It was a communication with the U.S. team before, so for us it feels good to do that and it is something we stand for as a team.”

So Sweden did it, too, but the American women have been kneeling and complaining since 2017. Maybe they should pay more attention to their actual game:

The United States came out stale, with its best chance of the opening half coming in the final moments when Rose Lavelle’s shot hit the post. Coach Vlatko Andonovski made changes for the second half, subbing in Carli Lloyd for Alex Morgan and Julie Ertz for Sam Mewis. But Blackstenius scored again in the 54th minute, beating goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, as the Americans continued to struggle. Lina Hurtig then scored in the 72nd.The loss was the first for the United States under Andonovski, who took over when former coach Jill Ellis stepped down following the team’s World Cup victory in France.
