George Mason U. to Require New ‘Racial Justice’ Course for All Students

Progressive ideas are so popular that they almost always need to be made mandatory.

George Mason University plans to require new ‘racial justice’ course for ‘all students’
George Mason University has recently announced a new course on racial justice that will be offered during the fall semester. The three-credit elective will fulfill two Mason Core requirements in social and behavioral science and global understanding.
“Foundations for Building a Just Society” was created using recommendations from a previous pilot program established in 2019. The course was created by an interdisciplinary team including associate provost of undergraduate education Bethany Usher and associate professor of psychology Lauren Cattaneo.
The course will explore questions such as “can we walk in the world without bias?” and “how do we work toward social justice?”
According to the university’s press statement released on July 9, the effort to create the course was “intensified” by the “Black Lives Matter movement and the increased attention around the murder of George Floyd.”
The press statement says that the course is projected to eventually be a required course for “all students.”

Sarah Osman, a junior at George Mason who participated in the initial pilot program, said the course “gave her a greater understanding of what implicit biases she carries.” She went on to say, “we live in a world where the color of one’s skin determines every opportunity they receive and whether or not they will live to see tomorrow.”

Will the courses cover set-asidws, race-normed testing, Affirmative Action?

Sarah Osman clearly learned what she was supposed to say in that course. Well done Sarah, I don’t blame you for mouthing the party line. That’s a survival trait.
In fact we can learn from Sarah and know what to say in certain situations, without having to stick our noses into it for an entire course.

The accrediting body for medical education (allopathic/MD) is trying to do the same thing. Elements of “social justice” have been introduced into medical education for over three decades, but never formal requirements for a separate course. The problem with teaching “social justice” (even that term gives me nausea!) in health professions is that it takes time from far more critical and important subjects in an already full to the gills curriculum. I would not be surprised if “social justice” clinical rotation requirements weren’t next in the diseased brains of leftist medical whackademics.
There should be certain topics covered in such courses:
1) Individual merit is the key to progress in our society (not racial stereotypes)
2) Freedom and liberty is determined by protecting individual rights (not the “rights” of racial groups)
3) Before advocating a social change, stop and consider the impact upon everyone in society, not just the group that you are seeking to “promote.”
4) The rule of law includes the administration of justice in a “blind” way (e.g., a “color-blind” way). In other words, if George Floyd were white and Officer Derek Chavin were black, the same result should be reached.
5) The course should read Ibram X. Kendi’s article on a proposed Anti-Racism Constitutional Amendment and then analyze it from all viewpoints. Most readers will conclude that this is complete non-sense and completely incompatible with our current Constitutional democracy.
6) “Viewpoint diversity” is a necessary part of any valid diversity program.
These excellent points should be covered in every Civics course. You can bet that the “social justice” courses based on CRT at all colleges will either ignore or contradict every one of these points.

Our increasingly racialized politics is making that formal policy, with Miss Osman on the bottom of that totem pole. Too bad she can’t see it.
