Professor John Eastman spoke at the Trump rally on January 6th, but did not take any part in the events at the Capitol. Days later, with the school facing pressure, he retired from his position at Chapman University.
Now Eastman is suing the University of Colorado-Boulder, where he was a visiting scholar, alleging defamation stemming from the same event.
Elizabeth Hernandez reports at the Denver Post:
John Eastman lays groundwork to sue CU Boulder for stripping him of duties after appearance at Jan. 6 Trump rallyVisiting scholar John Eastman laid the groundwork to sue the University of Colorado Boulder on Thursday, filing a legal claim alleging defamation and violation of his First Amendment rights over school leaders’ response to his role in efforts to overturn the results of the presidential election. The six-page notice of claim, a necessary precursor to suing the university, also alleges breach of contract, and indicates Eastman will seek at least $1.9 million in damages, including nearly $20,000 that remains in a CU research account and $1.85 million in future salary he alleges he can’t earn because of “reputational harm.”The notice filed by Eastman — who spoke at President Donald Trump’s Washington, D.C., rally that preceded the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection — alleges CU officials “have denied him the ability to complete his duties under the contract. They have committed libel and slander against him and have irreparably damaged his career and his professional standing.”Randy Corporon, Eastman’s attorney, said CU Boulder has taken “remarkable steps to cancel the voice of my client.”
Katie Langford of Colorado Daily has more:
Visiting professor John Eastman taking steps to sue CU, seeking $1.8MUniversity of Colorado Boulder visiting professor John Eastman is taking steps to sue CU after he was stripped of most of his job duties following his speech at the Jan. 6 rally for President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., that preceded the Capitol insurrection.Eastman released a statement through the Claremont Institute, where he is the director for the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, that he has retained legal counsel to file a Notice of Claim, which is “a statutory prerequisite to the initiation of litigation against the University.”Eastman also hosted a news conference shortly after noon in Boulder at the corner of Baseline and Broadway, in front of Colorado Law, where he announced his intention to seek $1.8 million from CU in the lawsuit in which he plans to allege violation of his First Amendment rights, breach of contract, and defamation.
Obama associate Bill Ayers was a member of the domestic terror group The Weather Underground, and went on to teach at the University of Illinois at Chicago for years.
I fail to see why Professor Eastman is being treated like a criminal.
