Chicago lawmaker proposes suspending grade school history classes until “a suitable alternative is developed”

“I’m calling on the Illinois State Board of Education and local school districts to take immediate action by removing current history books and curriculum practices that unfairly communicate our history.”

State Rep. LaShawn Ford called on the Illinois State Board of Education to require schools to stop teaching history classes until a “suitable alternative is developed,” because of course the current curriculum, “leads to white privilege and a racist society.”

Watch:

From Rep. Ford’s press release:

Rep. Ford Today in Evanston to Call for the Abolishment of History Classes in Illinois Schools

Concerned that current school history teaching leads to white privilege and a racist society, state Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, D-Chicago, will join local leaders today at noon at the Robert Crown Center in Evanston to call on the state to stop its current history teaching practices until appropriate alternatives are developed.

“When it comes to teaching history in Illinois, we need to end the miseducation of Illinoisans,” Ford said. “I’m calling on the Illinois State Board of Education and local school districts to take immediate action by removing current history books and curriculum practices that unfairly communicate our history. Until a suitable alternative is developed, we should instead devote greater attention toward civics and ensuring students understand our democratic processes and how they can be involved. I’m also alarmed that people continue to display symbols of hate, such as the recent display of the Confederate flag in Evanston.”

Attendees at Sunday’s press conference will discuss how current history teaching practices overlook the contributions by Women and members of the Black, Jewish, LGBTQ communities and other groups. These individuals are pushing for an immediate change in history changing practice starting this school year.

The miseducation of our children must stop,” said Meleika Gardner of We Will. “It is urgent that it comes to an end as we witness our current climate become more hostile. Miseducation has fed and continues to feed systemic racism for generations. If Black History continues to be devalued and taught incorrectly, then it will call for further action.”

Evanston Mayor Steve Hagerty notes “As Mayor, I am not comfortable speaking on education, curriculum, and whether history lessons should be suspended. This is not my area. Personally, I support House Bill 4954 because I am interested in learning more and believe the history of Black people should be taught to all children and include all groups, Women, LatinX, and Native Indians who helped to build America.”

Better for them to just cancel all public education.

2smartforlibs | August 3, 2020 at 1:08 pm

How about teaching history, not revisionist BS?

Concrete examples, please.

Or are you just making smoke and noise, senator? Squeaky wheel gets the grease, right!?!

Didn’t the Supreme Court make a ruling a few months ago that there had to be actual racism in a racism claim? All this BS needs to stop. People like this jerk want to score a win for their team (the team of jerks, apparently) and end up causing much more harm than good. I think they are too stupid to realize that things were better before they opened their mouths.

Another ignoramus has his 15 minutes.

Maybe they should start their own schools. They will surely be able to compete when it comes to reading, writing and critical thinking.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to oldschooltwentysix. | August 3, 2020 at 2:21 pm

They had their own schools, funded by the taxpayers. No evil white people to be found. Then, they decided this wasn’t good enough, and the Warren court agreed.

Yet somehow, in this hopelessly racist society apparently established by the history curriculum in the Illinois school system, LaShawn Ford, a black man with a black first name, somehow became a state senator. Wonder of wonder, miracle of miracles! But wait – Is it possible he made these accomplishments, because people assumed from his first name that he was a black woman? And someone named Barack Obama, a black man, again with an obviously black name, became a state senator, then a US senator, and finally a two-term president. Somehow, the Illinois history curriculum prevent these two from public office.

Oh, wait. Maybe it’s not the history curriculum, so much as the lack of competition in public education that’s not serving well the children of Illinois and the rest of the US. Maybe a little more school choice, and some competition with the teachers’ unions, is in order. We know that blacks overwhelmingly favor school choice. We know that white liberals overwhelmingly oppose school choice. Maybe this is the modern day Jim Crow segregation to overthrow.

I think it’s fair to criticize Anglo-American culture for being racist. I mean plenty of enslaving happened in Latin America, but down there it was more of a straight forward “I’m more powerful than you so you’ll do as I say or I’ll kill you” kind of thing. Spain was an absolute monarchy, the notion of individual rights just wasn’t something people thought about.

In Virginia they liked to pontificate about the inalienable rights of all men, but they also liked having enslaved Africans to cut their tobacco for $0/hr. So they decided black men were not actually men. That act of self-serving hypocrisy plagues us to this day.

I don’t think high school history classes should leave out all the great things our culture has accomplished, but it shouldn’t leave out the bad things either.

BierceAmbrose in reply to Dennis. | August 3, 2020 at 3:27 pm

Well, let’s criticise the targets of the moment for what everybody was doing at the time. Lets the rest of us move on, having loaded the universal sin on the scapegoat.

Sucks to be the scapegoat, though…

BierceAmbrose in reply to Dennis. | August 3, 2020 at 3:34 pm

“So they decided black men were not actually men. That act of self-serving hypocrisy plagues us to this day.”

Or, they actually believed it. Lots of folks held lots of people to be bred-inferior; that would count as a mainstream — not dominant, not exclusive, but common enough nobody’s surprised when somebody espouses it — through end of WWII? Civil rights era in 1960s?

Certainly Pres Wilson thought various strains were bred-inferior, even to being unmixable across them, say in the US Federal Service. I don’t recall him suggesting black folks be bred out of existence — Sanger did, of course, which suggests that Planned Parenthood’s skewed statistics by “race” is right in line with her agenda.

“Race” is a slippery concept, BTW.

19th century Louisiana was less racist than the rest of the United States on account of the French influence. Slavery was a thing there, but free people of color had more rights than in most other states. A black man could get a license to practice law in pre-civil war Louisiana. Anyway, the point is we (meaning white anglophone protestants) weren’t the same as everybody else in terms of how we treated African Americans, we were a little bit worse.

BierceAmbrose in reply to Dennis. | August 3, 2020 at 3:37 pm

“That act of self-serving hypocrisy plagues us to this day.”

What plagues us to this day is self-serving jackholes continuing to use that, and any other past error they can find, to rationalize their shenagigans.

That law is long past. What do with the law we have now is on us. (If we’re so controlled by the past we have no agency in this, well, just shut up about it all; by that argument, we can’t do anything about it anyway.)

If Africans had not been enslaved then they never would have gotten out of sub-Saharan Africa in order that their descendants should be among the luckiest people in history to be born into the wealthiest, freest, most open society in the history of the world. The descendants of African slaves benefited more by their enslavement than anyone else. They should be thanking their lucky stars.

And all of the black-populated and run nations in the Caribbean are only such because they were brought there as slaves (and now own those islands).

The fact is that blacks were not going to get out of sub-saharan Africa on their own. They had no history of exploration or sea-faring. The only way that there ended up being black populations outside of Africa is because they were sold by other blacks and taken out as slaves. Do any blacks in the first world wish they were born in Africa? Do they really think life would be better for them there?

I think Muhammad Ali said it best when he went to Africa for the Rumble in the Jungle …

Be that as it may, the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow has not been good for white Americans. I mean we’ve ended up with a significant portion of our population that has little faith in our society’s laws and institutions and is difficult to live with as a result.

      pst314 in reply to Dennis. | August 3, 2020 at 5:40 pm

Are you seriously suggesting that current school history classes do *not* teach about slavery and Jim Crow? Seriously?

ConradCA in reply to Dennis. | August 3, 2020 at 10:00 pm

Culture isn’t racist, people are. We fought the civil war to end slavery and sacrificed 500,000 men. In the 60’s we ended Jim Crow. We provide equal opportunity to every citizen in the country. Blacks generally fail to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. They make bad choices and suffer the consequences.

It was Africans who made other blacks slaves and sold them to westerners. Blacks in the USA are a thousand times better off because they are in the USA instead of Africa. They should be grateful that their ancestors were brought to the USA.

True “History”….is not taught in “Public” schools today….Today, these ‘students”, are being indoctrinated, by ultra left wing sympathizers…’teachers”, from the dictates of their Heinous Union!

What has “Police”, got to do with the teachers union/strikes? they already don;t earn their pay…& they want “MORE? ? ? ”

To be fair….’ALL TEACHERS”, are not guilty….but the preponderance of evidence points to a majority of them, are “corrupt, & narcissistic”, & don’t really care about the kids education!

“we should instead devote greater attention toward civics and ensuring students understand our democratic processes”

Of course those democratic processes are the product of white, English language, Protestant culture, but we should totally leave that out.

To have a ‘conversation’ (a get your mind right white boy lecture), you must first define ”White Privilege” and ”White Supremacy”,

and provide specific cases that prove these assertions actually exist.

At this point these assertions are just bullying by the melanin blessed, and are examples of the power of the ”heckler’s vote”, the tools of the demagogue.

A truth to be told is: Without White Superiority, there would be no black privilege.

History classes suspended? No problem. Study the future. History repeats itself. The future of Chicago will be just like the past only worse.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | August 3, 2020 at 1:40 pm

we should instead devote greater attention toward civics and ensuring students understand our democratic processes and how they can be involved.

SOmeone needs to teach LaShawn some history; the Founders were, at best, very wary of democratic processes. That’s why, in the Constitution they only specified democratic processes for the House of Representatives, and not for anything else. The fact is that democratic processes are, generally, treated as jokes by most people and are among the most frivolous of methods of putting people into positions of power. THis is why we are confronted more and more by familial political dynasties. People would vote for Bugs Bunny just because they recognize the name. I present this idiot, LaShawn Ford as evidence of that. He probably isn’t qualified to be doing much more than pushing a mop around, but, through democratic processes, here he is, advocating to shelve history because he doesn’t like the real story of how the greatest nation to have ever existed came to be and who really created and built it.

Of course, the bedrock of American governmental architecture is our Constitution, which is above any democratic processes and serves to limit the power of any democratic processes the same way it limits all other powers of the federal government. I get so sick of these America-hating retards always yapping on about “democracy”. They really have no clue what the hell they are talking about.

Well this is ILLnoise so there’s really no telling what they’ve been teaching up there but then again its a black guy who probably wants to start teaching that God created the black race in order to outshine the white race so it is questionable. How those illeducated historians have been getting it all wrong all these years is just amazing. Oh well, lets back burner the issue until we know more in the next hundred years.

That thing about Guam – boy, that was close! Imagine the disaster that would have been, with it tipping over and all, with all that military equipment going to the bottom! It’s a good thing he spoke up!

Your play on the spelling of the state brings to mind a slogan idea. Texas has “Doin’t Mess with Texas”. How about “IL annoys”?

Unfortunately, I grew up in Ill Annoys, right across the river from the State of Misery.

The ink on my high school diploma was still wet when I GTFO and moved to Texas.

I wonder why these people want to further hamstring the students. I value a good quality education as a starting point for success.

Ignorant slaves are easier to control.

The first thing I thought when I saw this article was “That fool is going to ruin the educations of the children and grand children of the damn fools who elected him. Two generations from now they’ll be complaining about being noncompetitive in the workforce because of the faulty education provided to them by the racist government.” (I know, not to worry because “equity” will take care of them.)

He’s right. Democrats need time to spread social justice, tear down statues, rewrite their history, and stoke diversity (e.g. racism, sexism, genderism)… breeds adversity. #BabyLivesMatter

    UserP in reply to n.n. | August 3, 2020 at 2:44 pm

On a brighter note, if black people, living or dead, would just get out and vote they could take the power away from whites that have destroyed the city and then, when firmly in control, the damage could be mitigated without wearing face masks. Instead of letting whites destroy the city with crime and violence, it could be made safe for a black man to out and get a sub sandwich at two o’clock in the morning without white men wearing MAGA hats jumping him.

Apply that to state and federal government and in a few years, if you have enough riots and protests and marches, and reduction of police budgets, you could elect black governors and senators and congress persons. And ultimately, if you are very, very determined, you could do the unthinkable: you get a black man elected president of the United States and his wife would be proud of her country for the first time in her adult life. Then you would see real change. Minorities would be treated fairly. There would be no more riots and protests. There would be free universal healthcare and everyone could keep their same doctor. All racial problems would be solved. And it would prove once and for all that when blacks have power they will fix things that whites have screwed up so badly since the days of the founding fathers with their white privilege. So get out there and vote for the sake of your unborn children’s future. Their lives matter. (sarc)

Nope. Next.

It’s not just history that is being lynched by black supremacists like Ford. Math, engineering and science are already under assault. By burning history books Ford is establishing a beachhead that can be used to eventually require a political litmus test for all academic subjects.

Like any dumbing down of education the baleful effects won’t be felt for years to come. And you can be sure that those responsible for this catastrophe will never be held accountable. Instead, there will be a fresh doubling down on teaching black supremacy, quack science like man-made global warming, and similar educational malpractice.

Here is a chilling thought experiment. How would you like to drive across a bridge or enter a skyscraper designed and built by people who think mathematical theorems and structural safety analysis are racist constructs designed by white supremacists and to be eliminated? How about being operated on by doctors and nurses who were trained to regard biological sciences as environmental genocide and white people as murderous racist oppressors? This is not as far fetched a scenario as you may think.

Attendees at Sunday’s press conference will discuss how current history teaching practices overlook the contributions by Women and members of the Black, Jewish, LGBTQ communities and other groups.

Uh … none of them are overlooked. Sure, there are a few historical characters whose contributions aren’t given the weight they deserve but that happens more to white men (who have done the great bulk of shaping history in America) than anyone else.

As to perverts being overlooked, I think they mean that their perversions aren’t being proselytized to the young students; that only their actual accomplishments (for those with real accomplishments) are taught.

Blacks are certainly not overlooked. Quite the opposite. I was in elementary school when the whole Black History Month thing took off and we were forced to pretend that 2nd rate accomplishments by some handful of black men were somehow equal in importance to the works of Einstein and Columbus and James Madison … And now they are on some sort of push to claim that unskilled labor is, somehow, as important to the construction of something as the people who created it and managed it.

As to Jews, I don’t know why they tried to throw that in there. You can’t pick up a history book without reading about countless Jewish accomplishments. It is a total joke to try and include Jews in this list of peoples allegedly omitted from history lessons. Sure, they might not teach all that much about Chaim Solomon, but big deal. That is more a matter of the interest and the way he contributed than anything else. There isn’t even all that much discussion about how Washington contributed financially to the Revolution.

People who spout this obvious BS about history need to be slapped down in public. The biggest mistake we ever made was trying to appease these idiots and agreeing to teach exaggerations and lies to public school kids to help these people with their own self-esteem problems. Nothing good comes of lying like that.

And were these little scholars to be taught “proper” history, they would actually show up for class eager to learn, their fathers would come home, their mothers would get off of welfare, their friends, neighborhoods and relatives would stop beating, robbing and killing each other…. It’s just that we are insulting their intellects with a history that doesn’t reflect how they would rather history had been.

    “Gee Officer Krupke……..!”

“…..lies to public school kids to help these people with their own self-esteem problems. Nothing good comes of lying…..”

Absolutely! Lies to boost self-esteem are the worst sort, as violence erupts when the lie is refuted.

“White folks was in the caves while we was building empires,

We built pyramids before Donald Trump even knew what architecture was…

We taught philosophy and astrology [sic] and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it…

Do some cracker come and tell you, ‘Well my mother and father blood go back to the Mayflower,’ you better hold your pocket. That ain’t nothing to be proud of, that means their forefathers was crooks.”

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. Rewriting it to make you feel better won’t change that. If anything it will make it worse, as the revised history will have you walking right into what you thought you could avoid.

Let. It. Burn.

I’m ready to head into segregated America. Offer them reparations by giving them a home in “Progressia”, the northeastern part of the US. Let them create their own utopia, and build a 30 foot tall wall to keep them out of “Liberty”, and watch it fall into a third-world hellhole with white liberals lording over them.

That is so true! Three of my grandparents escaped Lithuania AND THE RUSSIAN CZARIST RULERS in the late 1800s and early 1910s and immigrated to the USA; the 4th was born in the USA to parents had who had fled Lithuania in the 1880s or so for the same reason. They spoke the ancient language of Lithuania (and, of course, some Russian forced on them), but they learned English. They were mostly peasants in Europe, and labored here in the kinds of jobs and work available to such immigrants. They continued to practice their Roman Catholic faith, and treasured it in their churches, schools and social clubs. They didn’t have much education, but they made certain all their children (2 + 10) completed high school – even in the Depression; the 11 of their 12 children who married formed 2-parent households and raised their families.

Will the new history books explain how Mandela used tires for “necklacing”?

This pitiful young fella has been brainwashed and is delusional. Believing that he has anything to gain, or lose, because of complexion is called stuck-on-stupid.

Will the new history also describe the decline of South Africa’s infrastructure since the whites were thrown out of all the jobs keeping the machinery going? Or, how the once-great South African Airways is broke, and now has as top priority, skin color and not competence?

This fool couldn’t spell “history” if you spotted him 3 letters.

I recommend Harry Turtledove. He writes lots of alternate history.
I like the one where aliens invade in the middle of World War II.

Love that word: ignoramus. My Dad, who lived for 97 – 1/2 years, often used it to describe fools. Until recently, I thought it to be a word he made up because he was always interested in words, puns, etc. Recently, for some reason, I found it in the dictionary.

Good grief one can only imagine. He just wants to start teaching ‘his truth,’ to the children. You know, where a black edison invented the light bulb. And a black marconi invented radio. Not to mention how a black christ was born of a black virgin birth. Just to correct the white lies everybody has been taught forever. I’m serious, these people, if you can call them that, are psychotic. To them their truth makes perfect sense. I saw a black youngster the other day wearing a tee shirt that proclaimed “They hate us because they ain’t us!” My only thought was how do so many of them go on? Their entire culture here in Aneruca is a grotesque lie and they think that’s going to work for them over the long run. I’m talking an animalistic level of reasoning here. well just look at the great record, at how much african americans have done to improve public education up to now……….
oh, wait a second.

13% of the population, nearly 75% of ALL THE PROBLEMS IN SOCIETY. Acclimate or dissipate.

Another great suggestion that will surely end the black on black murder.

All this b.s. underlines the crucial importance of destroying the public schools–teacher union monopoly byrequiring school districts to credit parents with the same amount spent per child in the public school system for use in schools of their choice
