UN Chief Tells Israel to ‘Abandon’ Sovereignty Plan for Judea and Samaria
Secretary Pompeo: Decision on sovereignty is “for Israelis to make.”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has told Israel to “abandon” plans to apply sovereignty over parts of the Judea and Samaria region, news agency Reuters reported. The move “would constitute a most serious violation of international law,” the UN chief warned.
The statement comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considers extending Israel’s sovereignty over the area as early as next week, Israel news reports confirm. Based on an agreement with his coalition partner Benny Gantz, PM Netanyahu could be able to commence the procedure on July 1.
Israel gained control over the area from Jordan in the defensive war of 1967. The application of sovereignty over the region will be in keeping with U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan unveiled in January 2020. The Trump plan advocates for extending Israel’s sovereignty initially to over 30 percent of Judea and Samaria, which constitutes the historic Jewish heartland.
Reuters reported the UN chief’s statement:
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Israel on Wednesday to abandon plans to annex settlements in the occupied West Bank, warning this threatened prospects for peace with the Palestinians.
“If implemented, annexation would constitute a most serious violation of international law, grievously harm the prospect of a two-state solution and undercut the possibilities of a renewal of negotiations,” Guterres told the U.N. Security Council.
“I call on the Israeli Government to abandon its annexation plans,” he said.
The UN chief’s statement comes after repeated threats by the European Union to sanction Israel over the proposed measure. “We must work to discourage any possible initiative toward annexation,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned on May 15.
The EU campaign to bully Israel has strong backing from many European lawmakers. “More than 1,000 European parliamentarians from across political lines strongly opposed Israel’s plan…in a letter published on Wednesday,” France-based broadcaster EuroNews reported.
These lawmakers called for a European-led campaign to force Israel into submission. “Europe must take the lead in bringing international actors together to prevent annexation and to safeguard the prospects of the two-state solution and a just resolution to the conflict,” the letter signed by the European parliamentarians said.
The United States refused to join the EU-UN campaign against Israel, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday stating that decision on the sovereignty was “for Israelis to make.”
Pompeo-led State Department has been evident in its support for the move. “As we have made consistently clear, we are prepared to recognize Israeli actions to extend Israeli sovereignty and the application of Israeli law to areas of the West Bank that the vision foresees as being part of the State of Israel,” a State Department spokesperson clarified in April.
Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom reported Secretary Pompeo’s remarks:
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday it is up to Israel to make its own decisions on whether to declare sovereignty over Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to do despite international opposition.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Netanyahu’s July 1 target date, Pompeo said extending Israeli sovereignty was a decision “for Israelis to make.” (…)
Senior aides to US President Donald Trump began discussions on Tuesday on whether to give Netanyahu the green light for the application of sovereignty, which has drawn condemnation from the Palestinians, US Arab allies, and a number of other foreign governments.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday urged Israel to abandon plans to apply sovereignty to parts of Judea and Samaria, warning this threatened prospects for peace with the Palestinians.
Under Trump’s Middle East peace proposal, unveiled in January, it is envisaged that the United States would recognize the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria as part of Israel.
Presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden sided with the EU and the UN on the issue of sovereignty over Judea and Samaria. “I do not support annexation,” Biden said on May 19, referring to the planned extension of Israeli law to the area.
Biden also vowed to undo the measures taken by President Trump. “I’m going to reverse Trump administration steps which I think significantly undercut the prospects of peace,” he added. This would include moving the U.S. embassy out of Jerusalem, media reports said.

Israel should clear Gaza and the West Bank of all belligerents, allow the EU, which is already doomed, to take them. If they fail take them, then place them on strapped together barges and old ships. Then, let nature deal with them.
I am at a loss to see any value in these stupid and deranged people and cannot understand why Israel puts up with their endless crap.
There will be no peace because Muslims have no intention of living in peace with Jews.
Lets continue to remind lefties, Jews inside Israel, as well as Jews outside of Israel most particularly Democrat Jews in the USA, of a well-known hadith of the Muslims,
“O Muslim, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him”
Trust Muslims to be Muslims following Islam.
I agree, and that is why all the hostiles need to be evicted. Get then out of there, let Israel populate all of the area which was theirs to begin with.
Why do they get borders while they declare ours are racist?
“Why do they get borders while they declare ours are racist?”
OK, I’ll bite. When has the Israeli government declared the US borders are racist?
Biden also vowed to undo the measures taken by President Trump. “I’m going to reverse Trump administration steps which I think significantly undercut the prospects of peace,” he added. This would include moving the U.S. embassy out of Jerusalem, media reports said. “‘
So how are American Jews going to vote?
They’re overwhelmingly going to vote for Biden.
I think that Biden is just a talking head, becoming increasingly empty. Furthermore, someone else is telling him what to say. It seems unlikely that he will live through a term, and that is an attempt to place someone in the presidency who would not have a prayer of getting there on their own.
The Democrats are eventually going to get the Presidency, most likely in 2024, and when they do all hell will break loose. Our traitorous courts will rubber-stamp everything they do.
If the United Nobodies tell Israel to abandon sovereignty claims, Israel should annex the territory today.
When is Trump going to cut all U.S. funding for the UN, withdraw the U.S. from the UN, and revoke U.S. recognition of the UN? Trump’s contempt for the UNHRC and ICC is already, however, an excellent reason to reelect him.
The US should kick the UN out of NY, cut funding to the lowest level possible while still retaining our security council seat, and then veto everything.
The president and Israel need to establish facts on the ground that cannot be reversed by the next admin. That is how the Dems play the game. This Jew knows who to vote for, but collectively, I am guilty as an MOT. As for Biden’s statement, “I’m going to reverse Trump administration steps which I think significantly undercut the prospects of peace,”–what planet has he been living on?
The Dems’ Palestinian client define peace much as the Soviets did: the absence of opposition.
Which should come as no surprise…
The EU just plain doesn’t like sovereignty, period.
What 2 state solution is he talking about? Last time I looked, the PLO/PLA rejected the thought, let alone the possibility.
We need to reclaim that prime land on the East River and send the UN packing.
Apologies for the fat-fingered downvote, should’ve been thumbs up
The UN has spoken. Israel is doomed.
To U.N.: drop dead.
“’would constitute a most serious violation of international law,’ the UN chief warned”
Independent nations which want to remain independent rightly scoff at what leftists call “international law.”
The one-worlders want “international law” to saddle the world to their dreamed-of NWO.
Correct. They also see the UN as the one true world government.
What “international law” is it that Israel would be violating? Is this “international law” set forth in a treaty or other document signed and agreed to by various counties, such as the Cluster Munitions Convention, the Convention of the International Maritime Organization, the International Treaty for Safety of Life At Sea, the Hague Convention for Service of Process Abroad, ???????
Or is this “international law” just come bullshit that the UN makes up as it goes along?
International law = who has the biggest club.
So let me get this straight. Germany, which has now won WW2 with its pre-eminent position in the EU and which has been importing immigrants from parts of the world in which Jews are especially unpopular to finish what the Nazis started at the Wannsee Conference in 1942, have the chutzpah to warn Israelis not to take whatever measures they deem necessary to insure Never Again?
As we say in Queens, they can stick it where the sun don’t shine. At the end of the day, I suppose it won’t matter. Within a generation or two, it will be known as the Islamic Republic of Deutschland.
“The Germans will never forgive the Jews for Auschwitz.”

“This would include moving the U.S. embassy out of Jerusalem, media reports”
The man is too stupid to realize that he cant, this was done by an act of congress.
It’s like Ying and Yang. One one hand we have the country of Israel. And on the other hand we have a phony country whose sole purpose is to destroy Israel. We have achieved diversity!
I always wondered why they had to turn the Common Market into the European Union, but this actually makes sense.
