Rolling Stone Contributing Editor on the Media: “the American left has lost its mind”

“It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness.” — Matt Taibbi

https://youtu.be/NxLhGjvoeus

Down is up and up is down and everything is crazy now. Which might explain why Matt Taibbi, long-time Rolling Stone contributing editor, is now publicly criticizing the American left and in particular, the media.

Taibbi etched for himself a permanent spot in the annals of right-media scorn when he was brutally critical of Andrew Breitbart shortly after his untimely passing.

Writing not at Rolling Stone, but at Substack, Taibbi called the left a, “cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness.”

But police violence, and Trump’s daily assaults on the presidential competence standard, are only part of the disaster. On the other side of the political aisle, among self-described liberals, we’re watching an intellectual revolution. It feels liberating to say after years of tiptoeing around the fact, but the American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness.

The leaders of this new movement are replacing traditional liberal beliefs about tolerance, free inquiry, and even racial harmony with ideas so toxic and unattractive that they eschew debate, moving straight to shaming, threats, and intimidation. They are counting on the guilt-ridden, self-flagellating nature of traditional American progressives, who will not stand up for themselves, and will walk to the Razor voluntarily.

They’ve conned organization after organization into empowering panels to search out thoughtcrime, and it’s established now that anything can be an offense, from a UCLA professor placed under investigation for reading Martin Luther King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” out loud to a data scientist fired* from a research firm for — get this — retweeting an academic study suggesting nonviolent protests may be more politically effective than violent ones!

Now, this madness is coming for journalism. Beginning on Friday, June 5th, a series of controversies rocked the media. By my count, at least eight news organizations dealt with internal uprisings (it was likely more). Most involved groups of reporters and staffers demanding the firing or reprimand of colleagues who’d made politically “problematic” editorial or social media decisions.

The New York Times, the InterceptVox, the Philadelphia Inquirier, Variety, and others saw challenges to management.

Probably the most disturbing story involved Intercept writer Lee Fang, one of a fast-shrinking number of young reporters actually skilled in investigative journalism. Fang’s work in the area of campaign finance especially has led to concrete impact, including a record fine to a conservative Super PAC: few young reporters have done more to combat corruption.

Taibbi gives several examples of careers ruined by a movement now eating itself. It was only a matter of time before some of the true believers engaged in enough introspection to see how harmful leftism is not just on media or culture, but for the individuals sacrificed to a movement completely out of control.

This only goes to show that Twitter and Facebook are really the outer rings of Hell.

This guy matt taibibbi must know he is going to be cannibalized by the left sooner if not later. Either he has skeletons in his closet or he simply woke up to the reality that leftism eats itself in the end, they are all on the menu.

I’ve enjoyed Taibbi’s writing for a long time. He’s a devoted leftist, but he’s that rarest of rare birds these days, an Honest Leftist capable of independent thought. In that, he reminds me of George Orwell, a committed socialist until his dying day. Okay, he’s not the level of author Orwell was, but who is?

I agree. I have always found his work interesting.

IF tabbi were “honest” he wouldn’t have lead off his diatribe with the lies the media made up about Trump. He’s no different than any other POS lefitst.

healthguyfsu | June 16, 2020 at 3:19 pm

Yeah, this guy gets zero credit. He just knows they’re finally coming for him, too, and he has no choice now.

Good job being part of the problem and steamrolling the solution when it still had a chance.

TheOldZombie | June 16, 2020 at 3:21 pm

Taibbi must have realized that he’s going to be eaten by the mob soon.

But he has not yet realized that it was him and people like him who created the monster that is now about to eat him and the rest of the people like him.

Taibbi is the only leftist who has been consistently writing in recent years that Journalism, as a profession, was destroying itself because it was abandoning any pretense of trying to tell the actual truth. He has a political philosophy that I don’t agree with, but unlike everyone else now on the left, he will not lie.

Try PARLOR. Ditch The cesspool that is twitter.

Spell check and even my web browser tries intentionally to avoid Parler. But it is Parler, not Parlor

    LookoutABear in reply to 2smartforlibs. | June 16, 2020 at 4:37 pm

but what’s to stop these Twitter alternatives from becoming as toxic as twitter?

healthguyfsu in reply to LookoutABear. | June 16, 2020 at 6:01 pm

Hopefully better management and the idea that their competitive edge can be maintained by providing an alternative to the wokeverse.

I signed up at both Parlor and GAB to show support for something other than Twitter and Facebook. I haven’t done anything but sign up. I don’t see why anyone needs “Social Media.” I don’t and so I don’t comment on any of them.

Anyone who still contributes to Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth should perhaps think about calling them-self a Conservative.

replacing traditional liberal beliefs about tolerance, free inquiry, and even racial harmony with ideas so toxic and unattractive that they eschew debate, moving straight to shaming, threats, and intimidation.

Sorry, but I’ve been around for a while, and so am well aware that “tolerance, free inquiry, and [any sort of] harmony” haven’t been the hallarks of American liberalism for at least half a century. They really should let Taibbi out more. Though he is right that recently it’s gone from being demanding, unpleasant, smug and extraordinariy unimaginative to barking moonbat Cultural Revolution-level mad. The good news is that eventually even Ragspierre goes to the guillotine.

To paraphrase ol’ Walt Cronkite, “When you’ve lost Rolling Stone, you’ve lost the election.”

    healthguyfsu in reply to locomotivebreath1901. | June 16, 2020 at 6:03 pm

Unfortunately, I don’t think the woke mob of misfits has lost Rolling stone. This guy had to write outside of it to dare speak up against the lefty cult.

The Ukrainian impeachment hoax began just as RussiaGate turned out to be a hoax.
Chinese Flu broke out the split second the phony impeachment failed.
Communists and black supremacists went nuts over a fentanyl addict dying in custody after resisting arrest.

What’s next?

Space aliens, or is that space undocumented immigrants?

Or a massive earthquake in Yellowstone.

    Or Biden turns trans.

On my Bingo Card for the next six months, I’ve got:
    – violence at/outside a Trump rally
    – firebombing a GOP campaign office
    – assassination attempt (Trump or Pence)
    – oil spill (bonus if it’s associated with the Keystone Pipeline)
    – NY indicts Trump (or a family member) for something financial
    – China/NK saber rattling/shots fired
    – sabotage of economic recovery by governors and/or Congress
    – leak of Trump’s tax returns, with tendentious media spin
    – one panic about the food supply
    – one environmental panic

Note that some of these combine nicely — like states ramping up energy taxes after an oil spill or Global Warming panic with bad consequences for the economy. Or state policies that squeeze trucking companies, with consequences for the food supply chain.

add- India fires on Chinese invaders.

Grrr8 American in reply to clintack. | June 17, 2020 at 9:05 am

Add-in a 2008 redux — a major financial crisis — on steroids. The central banks have already so manipulated the markets, allowed derivate speculation to run at record levels, and created from thin air unprecedented amounts of currency that such a crisis is probably inevitable anyway. So it wouldn’t take much to trigger it on demand.

markymark in reply to clintack. | June 17, 2020 at 12:17 pm

I would say the over/under on your list is about 6/10. There are several gimmes there- violence at/near a Trump rally, economic sabotage by Govs/Congress, NY indicting Trump, China saber-rattling, etc.

The swamp(mattis, pelosi, the GOPe, John “Epsteinized” Roberts)/left/islamic axis is at war against us.

When they think they have beaten us, they will start destroying each other in their quest for full power.

This guy is being destroyed.

The mistake they radical crazies of leftists are making is they’re moving too fast now that they’ve tasted blood and power.

This proves the thesis I’ve been asserting for some time.

Be warned: they’ve coming for us.

    oldgoat36 in reply to TheFineReport.com. | June 16, 2020 at 6:14 pm

This is mobilization of a revolution, not that dissimilar to how most take place. Riots are common, with escalating violence. Once the flames are lit it is only a matter of time till it becomes full out war.

Can you really take Tabbi seriously when he opens his article with the same manufactured lies about Trump that the media he’s deriding propagated?
