Boston University Lays Off 1,600 People Due to Coronavirus Crisis

The report doesn’t specify which type of workers were laid off, and it would be interesting to know. Were they food services and facilities staffers or administrators?

Coronavirus: Boston University lays off 1,600 amid pandemicIn a painful but unmistakable example of the coronavirus pandemic’s economic toll, Boston University has laid off 1,636 employees, state filings show.The layoffs were listed in the weekly Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act report through MassHire Department of Career Services. The layoffs were effective Friday, April 3.The BU layoffs made up, by far, the largest single total listed among 17 businesses or entities announcing layoffs in the report, for the week ending April 3. The other 16 entities reported a combined total of 2,088 lost jobs.Two Western Massachusetts entities were on the WARN list. One was Iredale Cosmetics, Inc., of Great Barrington, which reported 47 employees affected.Team Member Services of Hadley reported 10 employees affected. Ten companies on the list were located in Boston or adjacent suburbs. Other than Boston University, the largest layoff number came from the Boston Westin Waterfront, with 435.
