Dickinson College Considering Removal of Slaveholder Names From Campus

Even the school’s namesake, John Dickinson, is on the list.

Dickinson College considers removing names of slaveholders from campus
A midstate college could soon remove the names of slaveholders that are commemorated on campus buildings.
A recent report from a group of Dickinson College students and faculty detailed founding members’ relationships to slavery–including the college’s namesake, John Dickinson.
The House Divided Project identified three of them as “unrepentant slaveholders.”
John Montgomery, John Armstrong, and Thomas Cooper never freed their slaves in their lifetimes and in some cases strongly defended slavery. Dickinson and others eventually came to renounce slavery in their lifetimes.
Project director and history professor Matthew Pinsker said Montgomery, Armstrong and Cooper’s names were added to buildings on the Cumberland County campus as recently as the 1990s without much consideration.
He’s now on a committee assembled by the college that will look at the report and decide if those three names should be removed.
“And then, if they should,” said Pinsker, “would it make sense, would it be a powerful symbol to rename them after three former enslaved people who were important to the college’s history?”

So when does somebody start agitating to change the name of Washington, DC?
I’m waiting to them to remove Yale’s name.
I think Yale’s name is a lock; it won’t change.
That’s hilarious. The university was named Yale in return for the promise of a sizeable gift. Most of that gift was never given; old Elihu reneged, but the name stuck.
Shut it down. American “higher education” cannot be reformed. Let the diversity commissars and Communist faculty get honest jobs and see how they like it.
I wonder when serious American students will go to overseas universities for their education, rather than the overseas ones coming here?
Everyone knows how evil fossil fuels are, and of the outright wickedness of the internal combustion engine. What are today’s protestors going to say when, 50 years from now, they are accused of having owned several automobiles in their lifetime. Their children will have to live with the shame that they participated in it.
