Iowa Nursing Home Resident Confronts Kamala Harris: “Leave Our Healthcare Alone”
“We don’t want you to mess with it.”
A 91 year old nursing home resident named Roberta Jewell questioned 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) during a visit in Iowa yesterday. Ms. Jewell may be old, but she’s pretty sharp, and is clearly following the issues.
She urged Harris not to mess with healthcare.

Kamala Harris confronted by upset Iowa resident: ‘Leave our health care alone’
Presidential primary candidate Kamala Harris was confronted on Monday by an upset Iowa resident over the California senator’s plan to overhaul health care in the United States.
The Democrat was speaking to voters at the Bickford Senior Living Center in Muscatine, Iowa, when one of the center’s residents challenged her on how she planned to pay for “Medicare for All” and told her not to “mess with” health care.
“Leave our health care alone,” Roberta Jewell, a 91-year-old resident at the senior living facility, told Harris as she was describing her campaign’s health care proposal. “We don’t want you to mess with it.”
Harris responded that she doesn’t intend to mess with anyone’s health care, but to make sure that everyone has the coverage they want.
“I want to make sure that it’s the way you like it,” she told Jewell. “I promise you that. I won’t mess with the health care that you have.”

Ms. Jewell and other Americans are right to be concerned. When it comes to her plans for healthcare, Harris has been trying to have it both ways.

This week Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) released her long-awaited health care plan. Like most proposals from Harris, who is running for president, her plan to address America’s health care woes is full of hyperbole and void of detail.
Harris unveiled her health care blueprint via an essay on Medium.com titled, “My Plan For Medicare For All.” Harris’ plan should be read with a keen sense of skepticism. Harris has a long history of vacillating (also known as flip-flopping) when it comes to crucial health care matters.
For instance, in a January CNN town hall event, Harris declared her unwavering support of “Medicare for All” and the elimination of private insurance.
“I believe the solution—and I actually feel very strongly about this—is that we need to have Medicare for all,” Harris said. “That’s just the bottom line.”
Harris was later pressed about her stance on whether Americans should be allowed to purchase (private) health insurance outside of the scope of government.
It’s amazing that we’re even having a conversation about healthcare with Democrat candidates barely a decade after they passed Obamacare.
If the GOP had passed such sweeping legislation and then started campaigning against it so quickly, the media would be relentlessly questioning the failure of the first try. Republicans would be treated as having no business trying to fix a problem they created. No one has forgotten what happened the last time Democrats “fixed” healthcare.

The only way to provide “Medicare for all” would be to significantly increase Medicare reimbursement rates (which would make the program fantastically costly) or to degrade what’s meant by “Medicare,” most likely via some means of rationing.
Since the reality is that it is those who now receive Medicare who have the most to lose should “Medicare for all” be enacted, it should not be surprising to find the strongest opposition to it there.
