The number of individuals classified as Islamists by Germany’s domestic intelligence service has crossed 26,000, German newspapers reported. The threat from Islamic terrorism in Germany “remains at a high level,” the spy service disclosed.
The Islamic State is “restructuring itself into an underground terrorist group” following its military defeat in the Middle East. The terrorist organization was particularly shifting towards a strategy of hitting soft targets, the intelligence report said.
German newspaper Die Welt reported the key findings of the report released by the country’s domestic Intelligence agency, (BfV):
The number of Islamists in Germany has increased last year, media reports indicate. It has risen from 25,810 in the previous year to 26,560, the Funke Media Group newspapers reported citing the annual report of the German intelligence agency (BfV) that is being presented on Thursday.Germany “remains on the cross hairs of Jihadi organization,” the newspaper article quoted the [intelligence] report. German national territory as well as German interests in different parts of the world face a “high level of sustained threat.” The security forces have uncovered “a series of terror plots in varying stages of planning.”While the majority of the terror attacks in the last years in Germany were carried out by individual perpetrators, the report continued: In almost all the cases they got support from foreign terrorist organizations in planning and preparation. Even ‘complex attacks’ like one in Paris in November 2015 cannot be ruled out [in the future]. [Translated by the author]
While the Islamist threat is on the rise, the German mainstream media want to keep the heat on the “right-wing hate speech.”
In an editorial for Germany’s state-run Deutsche Welle on Thursday, columnist Fabian von der Mark blasted German “authorities’ obsession with Islamist terrorism” instead of targeting “hateful” groups like the PEGIDA movement. He called the PEGIDA-organized rallies the “meetings of hateful people.”
What German media elites, like Mark, ignore is the fact that the rise of the right-wing movements and surging Islamism in the country have happened due to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s open-door immigration policy. Opening Germany’s borders to illegal immigrants from Muslim-majority countries with high levels of Islamic radicalization has brought the country to this place in the first place.
The rise of the Alternative for Germany party (AfD), which the German political establishment and the mainstream media deeply despise, would not have taken place without Chancellor Merkel’s waving in of nearly a million migrants, mostly young men from Arab and Muslim countries, in the autumn of 2015. Many Germans lost faith in the mainstream politicians and authorities who were busy covering up the crime wave and Islamic fanaticism that was sweeping the country in the wake of the migrant influx.
Given Chancellor Merkel’s immigration policies (or lack thereof), Germany won’t be deporting any these Islamists or preventing the new ones from joining their ranks. As ISIS war criminals and their families return from Syria and Iraq, the country can expect another spike in these worrisome numbers. With the German political elite more interested in virtue signaling than securing the border or protecting the ordinary citizen, the Islamist terror threat will only continue to rise.
