Former Vice President Joe Biden gave his first speech as a Democrat presidential candidate in Pennsylvania on Monday, but it didn’t go that well as the 77-year-old man stumbled through the speech.
This is weird to me because when giving one-on-one interviews on TV Biden comes across as a well spoken adult.
From Grabien:
He opened: “I want to thank Rich Fritzgerald, the county executive for — the baladanny — the Alleghengy County executive for being here.”“The country wasn’t built by Wall St. bankers, CEOs, and hudge — heh — and hedge fund managers,” Biden stammered during what was supposed to be a headline moment. At various points he stumbled over words like “dignity,” “successful,” and “hospitals.” Occasionally words were entirely indecipherable.“Union workers, the UAW took extredable — cuts in their pensions and their future and the less to get GM working,” Biden said.
Breitbart’s John Nolte, my former coworker, noted that vitality is important for a presidential candidate. Look at President Barack Obama. Nolte called him “No Drama Obama; Calm, Cool Obama; Steady, Ready Obama — the guy who kept his opponents on constant defense, who ran against a neurotic (John McCain) who quit his campaign to save the economy and a weakling (Mitt Romney) who allowed CNN’s Candy Crowley make a public ass out of him.”
If Biden wins the presidency, he will be 78-years-old.
Nolte also compared Biden to Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is also 77-years-old. He doesn’t appear as frail or bumbly. During debates, rallies, and interviews, he has given us the impression that old age has not slowed him down.
This is the first time I’ve seen Biden like this. Yes, he has had goofy moments and off-the-wall remarks, but he also seemed to be confident and well-spoken. I’m guessing this was a prepared speech. Maybe he’s better with quick thinking than a prepared speech? I imagine in some interviews he’s given the questions beforehand.
Then again, this isn’t the first time around for Biden. since it’s his third presidential campaign. He has remained at the top of the polls since polling began for the Democrat presidential candidates. The latest shows he received a huge bump since his announcement. This is his first chance to actually make it.
I watched a few of his old rallies, whether it was for vice president or support for other candidates running for public office. He didn’t have many problems while speaking.
Here’s what I think. Biden wasn’t himself. I’ve said before Biden could become a huge challenge to Trump because he is likable, make people laugh, and comes across as relatable. Maybe next time just use points and improvise the rest.
Restrained Biden is not Biden. He needs be himself. Off-the-cuff Biden makes people laugh, which relaxes them and makes them comfortable. His gaffes make him relatable since Lord knows we all do that.
