Latina Sorority Charged With Hazing for Requiring Members to Study for 25 Hours a Week
“recklessly and intentionally endangering the health or safety”
This is a ridiculous charge. You would think the sorority would be praised for having a sound commitment to academic excellence, but no.
The College Fix reports:
Sorority charged with ‘hazing’ for requiring members to study 25 hours per week
A Latina sorority at the University of Virginia is suing the school after it was punished last year for allegedly “hazing” its members.
What exactly did Sigma Lambda Upsilon do that was considered “recklessly and intentionally endangering the health or safety” of its sisters? Requiring members to study for 25 hours per week.
According to The Daily Progress, an SLU recruit had complained to a professor about the sorority’s mandate, and the prof then informed the UVa student affairs office and … the police.
After an investigation, campus officials determined the studying requirement violated school hazing rules.
The sorority’s lawsuit says UVa “made th[e] finding even though studying for 25 hours per week is not uncommon at leading colleges and universities.” In addition, UVa determined the sorority engaged in hazing “despite never providing SLU or any other fraternal organization notice of a general prohibition against studying 25 hours per week.”

Back in the 80’s the standard for fraternities was 1.5 hours for every hour of class time and there were sign in log sheets in the library.
The standard should be much higher now because 2 out of 3 hours of “studying” are spent on the smartphone.
I am guessing the complainant is a scholarship athlete.
25 hrs would have left me with Thurs-Sun totally free, just sayin.
I wonder what the police investigation concluded. That the University of Virginia’s administration are insane???? Imagine, studying in college!
even more to the point: isn’t a latin female only sorority racist?
#ShutItDown! 😉
At two of the universities where I taught, they required their freshmen living communities to study at least two hours per night. Faculty took turns doing office hours in the dorm so that we could be available to the students for questions and help. It was great. Students loved it. Studying in college… what a novel concept.
As the student is not required to join the sorority and this requirement is known, the student can simply elect not to join.
But I guess that concept is above the understanding of UVA administrators.
This is one Latina group that Ocasio-Cortez won’t be supporting. It is obvious that she didn’t study 25 hours total in 4 years of college.
The college would prefer their female students party 25 hours a week, and increase the likelihood they will get sexually assaulted. Therefore personally relate with the #MeToo movement.
