I shared Becket Adams’ piece on Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s comments to the press on Facebook and said that hell froze over because I actually agreed with her on something. The more I thought about it, the more I realized I needed to write about it. Pelosi told the press:
“I wish the press would spend a lot more time on what we need to do here to meet the needs of the American people instead of morning, noon, and night allegations against the president,” said Pelosi, D-Calif.“There are other things going on that are newsworthy,” she added after a CNN reporter asked her about Trump. “I think you would have more viewers or readers if you address concerns that people have rather than just this ongoing, ongoing coverage of what’s current with the president from one day to the next.”
Pelosi added: “The Justice Department, the Mueller investigation they’ll work their will but there are other things going on that are newsworthy.”
She is absolutely correct. Why do I go to Reason first thing in the morning? Yes, I’m a libertarian, but it’s one of the few places that reports on policy more than anything else.
You know, decisions and ideas that actually affect people’s daily lives.
Maybe Pelosi realizes that this is why Trump won. During the campaign he concentrated on the economy, jobs, etc. You know, in the words of Pelosi, he addressed “concerns that people have.”
I don’t agree with Pelosi on policy, but it’s nice to see that she wants the focus to stay on policy and only shift to allegations against Trump when someone has concrete evidence against him.
This won’t stop her from attacking Trump. In the same presser she spoke about the border wall fight and has no problem keeping the government shut down forever instead of negotiating for funds for the wall.
Becket mentioned in his article that Pelosi didn’t like answering questions about impeachment before the midterms and more than likely she’s sick of it always coming up.
I agree with Ed Morrissey at Hot Air:
Even so, why scold the media for obsessing over her opponent’s supposed misdeeds? It could just be that Pelosi wants the focus to be positive for the start of the next Congress rather than on what Democrats will start doing with subpoena power, but there’s no way that Democratic discussions on farm bills will overshadow a president, especially Trump. Perhaps Pelosi’s worried about setting expectations too high for impeachment and wants to dial down the pressure. If that’s the case, then perhaps impeachment isn’t in the cards after all, at least not unless Robert Mueller finds more than what has emerged publicly.
I also think Pelosi wants the attention back on her. She finally has her beloved gavel back! I believe she’s ticked that the attention remains on Trump and not on her or the Democrats in the House.
No matter the reasons the press should listen to Pelosi. If anyone can get through to them I believe it can be her.
