Handmaid’s Tale Themed Protests of Pence are Not Only Stupid but Dishonest

The left has always been crazy about street theater as a form of protest, especially if it involves do-it-yourself costumes and props. In the age of Trump, and more specifically Mike Pence, progressives have latched onto the Hulu series the “Handmaid’s Tale” which imagines a dystopian future where women have lost many of their rights.

The left tracks Pence’s movements and dispatches teams of women in red robes to protest almost anywhere he goes. Word was apparently sent about Pence’s appearance in Philadelphia.

Julia Cohen reports at the Daily Caller:

Women’s Protest Says Pence ‘Ushering in a Theocratic Society’A group of more than 100 women are planning to protest Vice President Mike Pence’s Monday visit to Philadelphia dressed in costumes resembling “The Handmaid’s Tale” because Pence will “[usher] in a theocratic society.”“Pence is one of the most dangerous reactionary figures in modern history … he has dutifully supported and been instrumental in every Trump policy since they made their unholy, “holy” alliance to bring Christian Fascism to the heart of this regime. He is a key figure in ushering in a theocratic society right out of the Handmaids Tale,” the event page for the protest states.“It is only fitting that Pence be greeted with 100 women dressed as handmaids. A visual representation of Pence’s end game of women totally stripped of their rights and humanity,” the event says.

Once again, the left is trying to use fear to convince the public that their own deranged fantasies are reality. Mike Pence is a very decent man, but instead of being hailed as someone least likely to be ensnared by a #MeToo scandal, he is smeared for what the left imagines him to be.

There are places in the world where women live under a theocracy, such as Iran. Yet you never heard these same leftists speak out when Obama was bending over backwards to do business with the Iranian regime.

Like all “intersectional” facets of the left, feminism is about the propagation of leftism first and women last.

There is another troubling aspect of the “Handmaid’s Tale” which is conveniently overlooked by these protesters. It’s a point I made in my most recent column for Townhall:

A little reported fact is that the show’s star, Elisabeth Moss, is a member of the Church of Scientology (Hollywood’s unofficial religion), which has been repeatedly accused of forcing women to have abortions against their will, not to mention other accusations of human rights violations like separating family members and targeting former members for personal destruction.

Even the left wing feminist blog Jezebel has acknowledged this conflict. Anna Merlan wrote in 2017:

Isn’t It Relevant That the Star of The Handmaid’s Tale Belongs to a Secretive, Allegedly Oppressive Religion?…It brings to mind the way Handmaid’s star Elisabeth Moss has, for years, cheerily dodged questions about her lifelong membership in Scientology and the alleged abuses within the church…But women who have left Scientology detail a series of abuses against women: a Tampa Bay Times story in 2010 detailed an alleged pattern of forced abortions for women in the Sea Org; a lawsuit against the church by one woman who says she was forced to have an abortion has been mired in complicated court proceedings since 2009. More recently, the public learned that celebrity Scientologist Danny Masterson is being investigated for sexual assault; all three women making the accusations allege that they were pressured by Scientology not to publicize what they say happened to them.

CNN’s Brian Stelter recently did a report about the relevance of the “Handmaid’s Tale” in the age of Trump. Watch Andrew Klavan of the Daily Wire react to the report below:

All of this explains the Pence Handmaid’s Tale meme you’ve probably seen on Twitter:

The mockery is well deserved.
