Scott Yenor teaches political science at Boise State University.
He wrote an essay in which he claimed that allowing children to choose their gender undermines the family and parental rights. Social justice warriors are now calling for his firing.
Even the outspoken progressive professor Camille Paglia has stated that she believes indulging children in transgenderism is a form of child abuse. Yet the left is treating Yenor as a heretic.
It all began when he wrote this at the Daily Signal:
Transgender Activists Are Seeking to Undermine Parental RightsWinning public sanction for same-sex marriage was the last great feminist victory. Same-sex marriage undermined sex roles within marriage. It put children ever more outside the purpose of marriage. It reinforced the idea that all means of sexual satisfaction are equal.Where will the radical feminist revolution roll to next? The new field for the rolling revolution with the greatest possibilities is transgender rights, especially as applied to children.Despite the accomplishments of radical feminism, the state has protected parents’ rights to raise their children. Children, after all, seem rightly under the charge of their parents, who provide personalized care for their development.Parental rights are related to the age of consent, which states protect in order for children to give time and space to become mature, independent adults. Americans do not want their children overly sexualized, and they respect the right of parents to educate their children.Transgender rights activists are seeking to abridge parental rights by elevating the independent choices of young children. Respecting the sexual and gender “choices” of ever-younger children erodes parental rights and compromises the integrity of the family as an independent unit.
That led to the campaign against Yenor. Bradford Richardson wrote at the Washington Times:
Boise State students seek to fire professor who criticized transgender movementStudents are calling for the firing of a Boise State University political scientist who criticized feminism and the transgender rights movement.Posters reading “Fire Scott Yenor” have emerged all over campus in the wake of his Aug. 2 op-ed in the Daily Signal, titled “Transgender Activists Are Seeking to Undermine Parental Rights.”The posters, first reported by The College Fix, claim transgender people have shorter life expectancies “due to violence and murder fueled by hateful rhetoric such as the words written by Scott Yener.”“You have blood on your hands Scott Yenor,” they read.A petition to fire Mr. Yenor has garnered more than 2,000 signatures.
One of the people leading the charge against Yenor is the school’s Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion who wrote the following about Yenor’s essay in a post on the school’s website titled Connecting The Dots:
There is a direct line between these fear fueled conspiratorial theories and the resurrection of a violent ideology which sees the “other” as a direct threat to existence and therefore necessary to obliterate. It is not an absolute succession and it is not a line without potential breaks or interruptions. Not every person who agrees with Yenor’s piece is likely to become an espoused Neo-Nazi, but likely every Neo-Nazi would agree with the substance of Yenor’s piece.
(Hat tip to Ben Shapiro, writing at the Weekly Standard.)
Yenor appeared on the Tucker Carlson show last night to discuss the situation:
The left plays the role of the victim in academia but that’s a farce. They control everything, especially the narrative. Run afoul of them and you’ll find yourself on trial before the grand inquisitors.
