While everyone is in outrage over Manafort’s indictment, which does not mention President Donald Trump or collusion with Russia, other court documents reveal that Trump’s former foreign policy advisor George Papadopoulos,30, pled guilty to lying to the FBI about his contact with Russians.
The indictment states that “there is probable cause to believe that on or about January 27, 2017, George Papadopoulos, the defendant, made material false statements and omitted material facts to the FBI regarding his interactions during the campaign with foreign contacts, including Russian nationals.”
Papadopoulos met with FBI agents on that date, who warned him against making false statements. The indictment insists that he “falsely described his interactions with a certain foreign contact who discussed ‘dirt’ related to emails concerning” now-failed Democrat presidential candidate.” However, it appears that he “had repeated communications with that contact” when he served on the campaign.
The indictment also says that Papadoulos obstructed the FBI investigation in February 2017 when he shut down his Facebook account that “contained communications he had with Russian nationals and other foreign contacts during the Campaign that contradicted statements he had made to the FBI.”

In fact, Mr. Papadopoulos met with the professor in March 2016 after learning he was joining the campaign, court documents say. The professor only took an interest in Mr. Papadopoulos because of his status on the campaign, according to the documents. In April 2016, the professor told Mr. Papadopoulos about “thousands of emails” related to Mrs. Clinton.After that March meeting, Mr. Papadopoulos emailed Trump campaign officials to say he had just met with his “good friend” the professor, who had introduced him to an individual described in the email as the niece of Russian President Vladimir Putin, court documents say. Mr. Papadopoulos said the topic of the meeting was “to arrange a meeting between us and the Russian leadership to discuss U.S.-Russia ties under President Trump,” according to the documents.A campaign official said he would “work it through the campaign,” but that no commitments should be made at that point, the documents say. The campaign official added, “Great work.”
It appears that Papadopoulos attempted to have then-presidential candidate Trump meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but it never came to fruition.
