There was an extended conversation on today’s Morning Joe as to whether Kim Jong Un could be deterred.
The discussion centered around the question of whether Kim is a rational actor. There was absolutely no ambiguity. The panel was discussing Kim’s rationality or lack thereof. Sample statement: John Heilemann asked what Mattis, Tillerson, and McMaster “think about the rationality of this North Korean leader?”
But that did not, ahem, deter Mika Brzezinski from saying, in her most serious and somber tone:
“When you talk about the rationality of the leaders . . . I honestly did not know which leader you were talking about, whether it was Trump or the North Korean leader? And that’s the sort of elephant in the room . . . So there’s this part here that is unspoken.”
There’s no reason to give Mika the benefit of the doubt in saying she was feigning confusion. But if indeed Mika did not know that the panel was discussing Kim and not Trump, then it is Brzezinski’s hold on reality that is seriously in question.
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: So we talk about these two leaders, and then Mattis, and Tillerson, and Kelly. The only problem is, when you talk about the rationality of the leaders, and a lot of this conversation, I honestly did not know which leader you were talking about, whether it was Trump or the North Korean leader? And that’s the sort of elephant in the room, that we are dealing with a president that some might argue is very hungry for war. Or is hungry to make unhinged decisions. And I’m not sure how much influence our foreign policy leaders have over that ultimately, when a decision is made. You remember over a year ago, General Hayden saying on our show that it was quick. It’s quick when it happens. So there’s this part here that’s unspoken.”
Note: watch Joe watching Mika as she plunged off the deep end. What do you think was going through his mind?
