Of all California’s national-level politicians, I consider Senator Dianne Feinstein the cream-of-the-crop.
Since our crops now include marijuana, you can gauge the quality level for yourself.
For example, her reply about President Donald Trump to a constituent’s ill-conceived question was as sane and diplomatic as one could reasonably achieve in San Fransisco.
“At what point do you think the Republican leaders will definitively turn against President Trump?” former Democratic Rep. Ellen Tauscher (Calif.) asked, prompting loud applause from the audience. “They’re a little late by my watch. Criticize him publicly and urge his resignation or impeachment.”Feinstein responded that she would rather not comment, and then discussed the impeachment procedure and what it entails. She went on to say that “it’s not the greatest thing in the world, that’s for sure.”
The #Resist-oriented crowd was not happy when she indicated that Trump was likely to remain in the Oval Office for his entire turn. However, the crowd turned on Feinstein when she thought he could be a good president.
“I just hope he has the ability to learn and change — and if he can, he can be a good president,” she said at a Commonwealth Club forum at the historic Herbst Theater, surprising San Franciscans used to hearing their politicians decry Trump.“Oh, come on!” a few people shouted amid boos. “No, no!” yelled others.While Feinstein was welcomed with a standing ovation by the 800-some attendees — and got strong applause throughout the night as she talked about immigration, global warming and gun control — her failure to offer a blunt denunciation of Trump riled the crowd.
Her constituents are so filled with rage and hate, they don’t want President Trump to be good, even though it would be best for the country. Feinstein is so filled with politics that she can’t challenge her constituents to admit there are moments that when President Trump is good, such as his handling of the Hurricane Harvey disaster.
Feinstein is 84 years old, and is currently the oldest member of the U.S. Senate. Her seat is up for election in 2018, and she has not indicated whether she will seek another term.
If she does not run, I suspect that the California Democratic Party will locate another candidate like Kamala Harris, who will then become California’s Senior Senator.
At that point, I may have to obtain some of California’s now legal pot.
