MSNBC Reporter: Trump “Absolutely Did Get a Hero’s Welcome” in Texas

On today’s Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski trashed President Trump in the wake of his visit to Texas yesterday. As Joe Scarborough was describing the positive impact a president’s visit to a disaster area will have, Brzezinski butted in to say it was not in Trump’s nature to be “human or empathetic.”

Cut to MSNBC reporter Garrett Haake, standing in deep water in the middle of a Houston highway, who replied:

“I was in Corpus Christi yesterday with the president, and he absolutely did get a hero’s welcome. They were lined up four or five deep at the airport to see him. You saw that huge crowd of people who came to the fire station and expressed their appreciation for the fact that he had come there.”

And that wasn’t the end of the unexpected. Mike Barnicle chimed in to say that “everyone that I have spoken to, either down there in Texas or in Washington, has remarked upon the remarkable job that FEMA is doing.”

Concluded Scarborough: “this is not 2005. This is not Katrina.”

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I think the reason we’re talking about this, is because I think his personality, and maybe even to go a step beyond that, is in question. And some argue that there’s something missing. Or something wrong with it. So, that’s why people are seeing a big void here.JOE SCARBOROUGH: Well, I think, the reason we’re talking about it is, it is so foreign to him –MIKA: — to be human, and empathetic.JOE: No, if you want to add that you can, Mika. I’m just saying, let me say it, and then — don’t finish my sentences for me . . . For the people of Texas, and for the people who lined up outside in Corpus Christi, and were yelling and screaming up and down the road, there were a ton of people who were thrilled that he was there. Showing up makes a big difference, and he’s shown up once, and he’s going to show up again this weekend.. . .GARRETT HAAKE: I just want to jump in on what Joe was saying a little bit. I was in Corpus Christi yesterday with the president. And he absolutely did get a hero’s welcome. They were lined up four or five deep at the airport to see him. You saw that huge crowd of people who came to the fire station and expressed their appreciation for the fact that he had come there.. . .MIKE BARNICLE: We should point out, to be fair about all of this, that everyone I have spoken to, either down there in Texas or in Washington, has remarked upon the remarkable job that FEMA is doing here in terms of leading this effort. And the remarkable coordination between state and local officials in dealing with this, and the relentless nature of what they’re dealing with has been an extraordinary job well done.JOE: It certainly is not 2005. This is not Katrina.
