Texas Gov. Abbott to seek law banning sanctuary cities

The Dallas Morning News reports:

Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday morning that he has used his power as governor to withhold funds to Texas cities and counties that adopt “sanctuary” policies toward unauthorized immigrants.”I have used my powers as governor of Texas to withhold funds to cities or counties that are declaring themselves to be sanctuary cities,” he told Fox News Channel. According to his office, though, Abbott hasn’t cut any money to any local entity in Texas over the issue.John Wittman, a spokesman for Abbott, said the statement wasn’t inaccurate, because the governor has the authority to withhold funds.”The Governor’s Office has made clear that it will withhold funds from any county in Texas that doesn’t comply with ICE detainer requests, and since the governor’s directive, all county Sheriffs have followed the law,” Wittman said in a detailed statement.
