California college leaders to Trump: Let our students stayWorried about President-elect Donald Trump’s threats to send 11 million illegal immigrants packing, leaders of the state’s public higher education system took collective action Tuesday to try and protect at least a portion of those at risk: tens of thousands of their own students.University of California president Janet Napolitano, Cal State chancellor Timothy White and Eloy Ortiz Oakley, chancellor-designate of California Community Colleges, sent their joint letter to Trump, imploring him to not make good on his campaign-trail rhetoric and to let the students finish their studies without having to always be looking over their shoulders in fear of deportation.“These sons and daughters of undocumented immigrants are as American as any other child across the nation,” despite their precise legal status, they wrote. “They represent some of the best our nation has to offer. They should be able to pursue their dream of higher education without fear of being arrested, deported, or rounded up just for trying to learn…. we implore you to let them know they are valued members of our communities and that they will be allowed to continue to pursue the American dream.”
