The Senate and House both unanimously passed a bill that allows families 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia even though President Obama threatened to veto.
Monday, the White House confirmed President Obama’s veto plans:
“That’s still the plan,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said when asked if the President planned to veto the bill.The White House had previously suggested Obama would not sign the bill when it first passed the Senate in May saying it would complicate diplomatic relations.Earnest defended the administration’s stance against the bill saying it is not “an effective, forceful way for us to respond to terrorism.”
President Obama’s tentative veto may not hold up. In May, after the Senate passed the legislations, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), “expressed confidence the Senate has the two-third votes it needs to override an Obama veto.”
