Qatar has released a Dutch woman after holding her for three months because she had the nerve to be raped and report it. Blunt, but true. This is life for women who live under Sharia law.
The woman only known as Laura reported her rape to officials, but they in turn arrested her for adultery because she had sex outside of marriage:
The woman, on a vacation with a friend, went out for drinks at a hotel bar in the Qatari capital in mid-March, lawyer Brian Lokollo previously told The Associated Press.While at the bar, she believes someone “messed with her drink” and her memory became hazy, Lokollo said. She later awoke alone, her clothes torn and the victim of a rape, he said.She was immediately detained after reporting the attack, Lokollo said. She previously appeared three times in court, he said.
They held her in jail for three months. On Monday, though, the courts gave her a “one-year suspended sentence and placed on probation for three years for the sex-related charge, and fined 3,000 Qatari Riyals ($823) for being drunk outside a licensed location.”
The courts found her rapist guilty of the same charges, but never added one for rape. They sentenced him “to 100 lashes for the illicit fornication charge and a further 40 lashes for the illegal consumption of alcohol.”
Dutch Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Daphne Kerremans confirmed the woman’s release but she and the Dutch Embassy in Doha did not provide more information.
Qatar outlaws sex out of wedlock. High-end hotels and duty-free shops at the airport carry alcohol, but “residents must have permission from their employers to buy at the country’s only government-run liquor store.”
Is anyone shocked when I say the articles I cited never mentioned that Qatar rules under a mixture of Sharia and civil law? The Associated Press said this woman’s case “highlights the societal differences in Qatar, home to gleaming skyscrapers and international aspirations that practices a highly conservative form of Islam similar to that of neighboring Saudi Arabia.”
Societal differences? No, Qatar and other Arab nations rule under Sharia law that treat women like second class citizens. Feminists in America complain about paying for their own birth control and abortions yet, women in the Middle East cannot even report a rape or else they face punishment.
If you go to the Middle East, don’t get raped and if you do, don’t you dare report it.
