Sugar Shortage in Venezuela Forces Coca-Cola to Stop Production

Coca-Cola has become the latest victim of socialism as the company announced it will no longer develop its product in Venezuela.

Without sugar, they can only produce sugar free Coca-Cola. From CBS News:

The Atlanta-based company said in an emailed statement Friday said that its production of sugar-sweetened beverages will be suspended in the coming days after local suppliers reported they had run out of the raw material. Sugar-free beverages are not affected and the company said its offices and distribution centers remain open in Venezuela.

Latin America drinks “29 per cent of the company’s 1.9 billion cans a day.” From The Telegraph:

Kerry Tressler, spokesman for Coca-Cola, told The Telegraph that local sugar suppliers in Venezuela informed the company that they will temporarily cease operations due to a lack of raw materials.“While this situation will impact the production of sugar-sweetened beverages in the coming days, the production lines for zero-sugar beverages such as bottled water and Coca-Cola Light are not impacted and continue operating normally,” she said, adding that the local offices and distribution centres remain open.“We are engaging with suppliers, government authorities and our associates to take the necessary actions for a prompt solution.”

However, due to the awful economy the country’s inflation will pass 700 percent and people still face food shortages. Empresas Polar said they could no longer produce beer “because of a lack of imported barley.”

Last week, President Nicolas Maduro implemented another “60-day state of emergency” after he accused the U.S. of trying “to topple his leftist government.” The government had the military perform the “biggest ever military manoeuvers.”

The medicine crisis in the country has led people to find help in the U.S. Dr. Osleidy Camejo told The New York Times that “[T]he death of a baby is our daily bread.” The University of the Andes Hospital did not have enough clean “water to wash blood from the operating table.” The have to use seltzer water to prep for surgery. Of course, Maduro keeps his head in the clouds and declared that Venezuela has the best health care system except maybe Cuba.

Luis Almagro, head of the Organization of American States (OAS), ranted against Maduro on Twitter, calling the president a “petty dictator.”
