Melissa Harris-Perry’s quote will live on in infamy:
“We have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents”
Doubling down didn’t help.
.@MHarrisPerry Sorry to "persecute" you, but the reason you can't make your students' parents grade their papers is: You're getting paid to.

We know what Lady Thatcher would have tweeted at Harris-Perry:

“And you know, there’s no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families.”–Margaret Thatcher, 1987

“They are casting their problems at society. And, you know, there’s no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look after themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours.” – in an interview in Women’s Own in 1987

I’ve put this up before, but it fits so well…
Dear MSNBC, if our kids belong to you, do your kids belong to us too? If so, can we take them hunting after church in our big pickup truck?

HEH…!!!
Maggie also said “There is no such thing as public money.”
First, the gov’t convinces you that the money you’re “allowed to keep after taxes” is a grace granted. It’s a position they assume backed by gunpower. Never forget that.
In the same way, they demand that children be educated by the “public education money machine” and they also do this only by dint of having firepower behind their threats. They will come, with armed guards, to persuade you to their way of thinking about your children. It’s happened before.
Yeah, but…
most Americans are clear on the concept that their money is their money, and their kids are theirs to raise and train.
Not to say that there is no threat. Obama was only hours ago making noise about having more 4 year-olds in public (i.e., govt. monopoly) training camps…er…schools.
It will go nowhere. That tide is actually starting to turn rather nicely, and it will start running stronger on the state and local levels. That defunct TEA party thingy at work…

MHP – stop aborting your responsibilities! And, be a woman not a feminist dishrag!
Exactly! Liberty is only suitable for men and women capable of self-moderating behavior. Only a select few will ever escape responsibility for their actions, and no one will ever escape the consequences of their juvenile behavior.
Thank you for including my tweet in your post, Professor. I visit your site at least daily and appreciate all your work.
I just decided to buy Amity Shlaes’ Coolidge biography!
This is the kind of thing I’d think would generate more outrage even by liberals. Except that having ‘your’ kids belong to someone else is another way of abdicating responsibility, which is one of the core tenets of liberalism, so I guess it’s not so odd after all.
When we yanked the kids out of the public schools to homeschool them, one of many issues was that their teachers indeed were sending home “papers to grade” as well as constant “assignments” required of the parents. We have never regretted the decision.
Leaning suggests dependence, which implies a temporary or permanent disability.
This nirvana of shared responsibility between parents, community, and educators already exists. We call such hellholes “inner city public schools”; the products of which are generally deficient in education, job skills, and moral character, despite ludicrous amounts of cash for education.
I will not cede my responsibilities to those who, when they fail miserably, refuse to take responsibility.
