Via Riehl World News:
The third person killed in the Boston Marathon bombings is a 23-year-old Chinese graduate student at Boston University who came to the U.S. because it was her dream to get a better education.
Identified by her father in China as Lü Lingzi, the tragic student was pursuing a graduate degree at Boston University BU in Mathematics and Statistics.
Lingzi was attending the Boston marathon with her friend Zhou Danling (pictured), a student of actuarial science at BU, who was originally said to be in a coma at Boston Medical Center but showing signs of improvement after suffering serious injuries in the blast.

Her family hadn’t wanted her identity revealed….
That was going to be my comment. Her family explicitly asked, through the Chinese Consulate, for her identity to remain unpublished. But her friends began posting on Facebook (or the Chinese equivalent) and the press got a hold of it.
I am sure Lu’s friends felt they were honoring her by posting about her but it does make me ache that the parents wishes for anonymity have gone out the window.
This strikes somewhat close to home. For 14 years I have worked with international students and scholars through a church. ESL, trips, parties, and so on. We have internationals to our home and sometimes visit with them in their homes/apartments. The vast majority of people with whom we work are PRC. I know several who left here to continue work/study in Boston. I’ll bet the “Chinese students and scholars” community is feeling this.
