Via Times of Israel:
A Saudi newspaper says a ministerial committee is looking into formally dropping public beheading as a method of execution in the oil-rich kingdom.
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where a death sentence results in beheading in a public square.
The authoritative daily al-Watan reported Sunday that the ministerial committee was considering firing squads as an alternative.
“This solution seems practical, especially in light of shortages in official swordsmen or their belated arrival to execution yards in some incidents; the aim is to avoid interruption of the regularly-taken security arrangements,” the ministerial committee said in a statement.
What next, a halt to crucifixions?
A Saudi security official says executions of seven Saudis sentenced to death by crucifixion and firing squad have been postponed for a week.
He said King Abdullah would review the sentences. He met families of the seven on Sunday.

The festival includes various activities, such as an informal coffee with an embassy diplomat, two rock concerts, and a special theater group presentation for children on the prevention of violence. The rock bands participating are a Jerusalem rock group called “Even Yerushalmi” and a “high energy Tel Aviv rock group, the Heeby Gee Bees.” The children’s presentation is described as:
“Yael Does It Differently.” Educational presentation for children on the prevention of violence. Created and performed by Yael’s Theater Group with special participation of Hatsiloo the clown. After the show, children will be invited to share and describe their experience in drawings for President Obama.
Also in advance of the visit, the U.S. embassy is holding a contest that will award 20 tickets to President Obama’s speech.

Wonder if there are places where we can’t afford to safe-guard an embassy…
My guess is that the “swordsman shortage” is a pretext for not confronting Saudi religious reactionaries head-on.
Yeah, that sequester is cancelling everything, huh?
The “Prophet” to be FuNloughed.
Islam must be dragged kicking and screaming out of the 7th century.
Must be the proposed *CUTS* to foreign aid, right?
Well played. Paul. 🙂
Deer Saudis,
There’s always this. Yes, yes, not invented in Saudi, but effective.
Sissies.
“He said King Abdullah would review the sentences. He met families of the seven on Sunday”….and were promptly shot to death’
Finished for you kingy.
If I were a Saudi executioner swordsman, I couldn’t help but say, “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
