The issue of whether the Benghazi attack was an “act of terror” was the highlight of the foreign policy debate.
Candy Crowley jumped to Obama’s assistance, and falsely confirmed Obama’s debate statement that he had called it an “act of terror” the day after the attack in a Rose Garden statement. Any fair reading of that statement was that Obama at most was talking about terrorism in general relating to 9/11/2001 not 9/11/2012. The administration, particularly U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, was emphatic that this was a protest gone bad.
There’s something we didn’t know, however. In a portion of a 60 Minutes interview which was not aired, Obama refused to say the attack was terrorism. (Original transcript here.)
That segment was just posted a couple of days ago.
Bret Baier picked up on it, and posts CBS Held Damaging Obama Benghazi Tape:
Two days before the election, CBS posted additional portions of a Sept. 12 “60 Minutes” interview where President Obama seems to contradict himself on the Benghazi attack. As the Benghazi investigation gets more attention and focus, CBS is once again adding to the Benghazi timeline.
In the interview, according to the latest portions, Obama would not say whether he thought the attack was terrorism. Yet he would later emphasize at a presidential debate that in the Rose Garden the same day, he had declared the attack an act of terror. That moment was one of the most intense exchanges in the second presidential debate. Romney was on the offensive on what conservatives believed was a serious vulnerability of Obama — the handling of the Benghazi attack and what he called it from the beginning.
Someone at CBS probably will be fired over this. Not for holding the segment back, but for publishing it at all.
