Breathe a sigh of relief, the left is back to sifting for ways to attack Paul Ryan.
It seems like they may have hit the bottom of the bucket, no doubt worried after the oppo (“cure for insomnia“) file that was released revealed how little they have against the congressman from Wisconsin. If you recall, his parents encouraging good grades through incentives was one of the items.
Ryan had been maneuvering through one of the first challenges to hit the Romney/Ryan campaign, Akin. This morning, Ryan succinctly summed up his position:
Rape is rape, period. End of story. … There’s no splitting hairs over rape.
Then in a revealing post at the NY Daily News, Derek Hunter details the left’s growing obsession with the fact that Paul Ryan has an ex-girlfriend who is African American. Hunter refers to a piece by TheRoot.com’s Keli Goff, who is flummoxed by this fact. (Goff also authored a piece in HuffPo, “Does President Obama Speak White?“). Says Hunter:
In this incredibly dumb piece, Goff asks the all-important (to no one) question, “Is the fact that Ryan has dated interracially a noteworthy detail to consider when analyzing his politics and policies? The simple answer is “no.” But to race-obsessed liberals the simple answer has no place in politics….This pointless piece ends up taking the long way around to implying Ryan is bad for black people and may not like them much, despite the fact that he has a black sister-in-law and a black ex-girlfriend. He’s bad, but probably not a racist.
This factoid about Paul Ryan’s ex-girlfriend is like kryptonite to the identity-politics-based, class-warfare-obsessed left. It destroys another one of their many themes, including that only those on the left are generous and tolerant–and that only government can truly enable your success.
The left cannot conceive of understanding our political landscape through lenses that don’t include race, religion, gender, or any other way they’ve come up with to divide us against each other.
Paul Ryan is a great example of someone who has eschewed the kind of divisive politics the left and Goff pursue; and by adding him to the ticket Romney has given our country one of the best chances at the unity Obama promised. Let’s get back to talking about that.
