Understatements

Understatement (via John Sexton):

Many critics view The Times as constitutionally unable to address the election in an unbiased fashion. Like a lot of America, it basked a bit in the warm glow of Mr. Obama’s election in 2008….

Understatement (via Tom Maguire):

It is hard to imagine, though, how Mr. Obama can truly distance himself from Mr. Wright.

Understatement:

In person, Senator Dick Lugar (R., Ind.) is a model of probity …  In a primary, however, he’s no-holds-barred — even juvenile.

Understatement:

Criticizing a tiny state surrounded by enemies hell-bent on its long-term destruction might not play in Peoria, but it plays very well in the salons of the Upper East Side. It is a false bravado, one where the people pushing their agendas know quite well that they have a large support group from the most influential ivory tower newspaper in the United States.

Understatement:

Michelle Obama is about to set the record for the most television appearances by a First Lady

Understatement:

“I just want you to remember that in the end, this all could come down to those last few thousand people that we register to vote. It could all come down to those few thousand folks we need to help to get to the polls in November”

We interrupt these understatements to give you an overstatement:

The state will argue that it is only helping the federal government do the job it is supposed to do and not interfering.  I don’t think that’s is [sic] right for the reasons stated.  Arizona may have some success in the lower courts, but I don’t believe that the Supreme Court Justices, whether conservative or liberal, will be at all sympathetic with the notion the federal control over immigration ought to delegated to 50 different states.
