strap a suicide belt to a 14-year-old?
This video is from several years ago, but it is a reminder of what the Israelis are up against, and how checkpoints and the security barrier were both necessary and effective.
So the next time you hear the usual suspects complaining about the “apartheid wall” and vilifying Israeli security measures, think not of this child, but of the people who sent him.

That would be the same kind of people who whip a young girl to death for being raped or stone a woman to death for the same thing.
Of the calumnies leveled against Israel, probably the two with the least connection to reality are "apartheid" and "genocide."
About the latter I assume few reading this weblog need to be told that after a dozen years there pretty much weren't any Jews in areas the Nazis controlled. After a period several times longer under Israeli control, the Palestinian population is growing by huge amounts. Whatever Israeli policy is in the territories, "genocidal" isn't it.
But "apartheid" is, of course, both loaded and untrue. The South African apartheid system applied to citizens of South Africa. The Israeli system–necessary and justified as pointed out in this post–doesn't apply to Arabs who are Israeli citizens. It is as much "apartheid" as South African restrictions on, say, Zimbabweans might have been. Whatever it is, it isn't apartheid.
There is a country in the area where Palestinian residents are limited as to where they can live and what jobs they can have. But it's Lebanon, so no one cares.
This kid's story figures prominently in the film The Making of a Martyr: http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/making_of_a_martyr/
(Made by Brooke Goldstein, now running The Lawfare Project)
Short story, he started out fairly pathetic, and then went to the cushy Israeli prison where he was indoctrinated by fellow prisoners. That's the basic story line that the film presents (of events following the news event from the YouTube video). No idea how he stands now.
Related to the concept, if I may: I did a series of graphics starting about 5 1/2 years ago entitled "Why There's a Fence" (as well as "Why There Are Checkpoints"). This post contains the last one and links to all the others: http://www.solomonia.com/blog/archive/2009/09/why-theres-a-fence-nassur-edition/
And their western enablers, stumbling towards dhimmitude and the second Shoah…
"intelligent people, or people who claim to be intelligent, (I have in mind the talking heads in the U.S. media such as Chris Matthews or Fareed Zakaria) cannot make the difference between the sham of the Muslim Brotherhood talking about freedom and democracy and the generic thirst in man to be free. These are the people who have like the Bourbons learned nothing and forgotten nothing. They are glibly about to put the Lenins of our time into trains heading for Moscows of our time, they find nothing odd that they are pushing for the Muslim Brotherhood to be taken into governing when everything needs to be done to keep the Muslim Brotherhood out"
Ricochet, Claire Berlinski
Oddly, like William Jacobson, Istanbul based prolific author and commentator Claire Berlinski does not have a Wikipedia entry despite having published four books.
Here is her website.

@viator – actually, there is a wikipedia page for me, although it could be beefed up. The threat that it would be removed apparently has subsided. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_A._Jacobson
What kind of people strap a suicide belt to a 14-year-old?
People who have no control over the forces of historical grievances that control their lives.
Surely you all remember the Jews who, immediately post WWII, blew up innocent German civilians in buses and cafes as payback for Nazi atrocities? Or the Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos, and other Asians who blew themselves up in Japanese public places to revenge the slaughter of millions of innocent civilians throughout Asia? I'd say they had some legitimate grievances.
Surely this response is not historically unique. And, if it is, surely it is only because of the unparalleled magnitude of the Jenin and Flotilla Massacres.
Another excellent day at the Excellence in Blogging HQ.
Luke, as someone once said, there'd be a lot more interest in freeing Tibet compared to a Palestinian state if the Dalai Lama was sending monks to blow up pizza parlors.
What kind of people strap a suicide belt to a 14-year-old?
Liberals and lunatics who lied to the kid that he has… "no control over the forces of historical grievances that control their lives" @LukeHandCool.
But thankfully, the boy listened to the Universe and controlled the outcome. He chose to live.
"What kind of people strap a suicide belt to a 14-year-old?"
The kind that say their g-d wants them to kill, that believes that killing oneself is a good thing, that killing as many others as possible is the ultimate good – and will be rewarded by that g-d by getting a ticket straight to heaven – along with 72 virgins waiting.
That kind of sick ideology has fooled Muslims and followers of Islam for as long as it has been preached. And, if you look at today's Video of the Day (2/7/11), it is not going to stop being spread by these haters. They are being taught such hate is "in their DNA." Sick.
