Gates: No Strategy To Stop Iran

The NY Times reports on a classified memo sent by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to President Obama admitting that current U.S. strategies on Iran will not succeed in stopping Iran from building a nuclear weapon:

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has warned in a secret three-page memorandum to top White House officials that the United States does not have an effective long-range policy for dealing with Iran’s steady progress toward nuclear capability, according to government officials familiar with the document.

Several officials said the highly classified analysis, written in January to President Obama’s national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones, touched off an intense effort inside the Pentagon, the White House and the intelligence agencies to develop new options for Mr. Obama. They include a revised set of military alternatives, still under development, to be considered should diplomacy and sanctions fail to force Iran to change course.

For once, a NY Times’ disclosure of highly classified information actually tells us nothing more than we already knew. The Obama administration’s weak, apologetic, and amateurish approach to Iran has failed.

From the campaign promise of negotiations without precondition, to the near silence when Iran erupted with protests last June over election fraud, to the setting of meaningless deadlines, to the false crisis with Israel over East Jerusalem, to the apology tours, at every step this administration has sent the wrong messages to Iran and the world.

The result of this failure will be military action or capitulation.
