After trying in vain to keep Manuel Zelaya in power, imposing sanctions on Honduran politicians and goods, and falsely labeling the constitutional effort to preserve democracy as an illegal “coup,” the Obama administration finally is calling it quits.
Hillary Clinton is seeking to convince other nations to recognize the current Honduran administration which was elected in November.
The U.S. also is taking steps to end the economic sanctions against Honduras:
Six months after the US cut aid to Honduras following its refusal to reinstate ousted leader Manuel Zelaya, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a first step toward normalizing relations with Honduras this week when she announced the United States would be restoring $37 million in aid….
The announcement comes at a time when most of Latin America continues to reject the legitimacy of the current government. Honduras was not invited to a recent gathering of heads of state at the Rio summit in Mexico and its membership in the Organization of American States (OAS) has yet to be restored.
As to Zelaya, he’s doing just fine. Hugo Chavez arranged for Zelaya to head Venezuela’s newly-formed Petrocaribas Political Council and Zelaya has a book deal in the works.
All’s well that ends well, thanks to the courage of the Hondurans in standing up to a variety of enemies, domestic and foreign.
