The New School, which used to be called the New School for Social Research, is a New York City institution of progressive politics and social theory. The President of the New School is former Democratic Senator Bob Kerrey from Nebraska. Former Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor winner. Sponsor of the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, and member of the 9/11 Commission.
Here is how the New School describes itself:
The New School is a legendary, progressive university comprising eight schools bound by a common, unusual intent: to prepare and inspire its 9,400 undergraduate and graduate students to bring actual, positive change to the world. From its Greenwich Village campus, The New School launches economists and actors, fashion designers and urban planners, dancers and anthropologists, orchestra conductors, filmmakers, political scientists, organizational experts, jazz musicians, scholars, psychologists, historians, journalists, and above all, world citizens-individuals whose ideas and innovations forge new paths of progress in the arts, design, humanities, public policy, and the social sciences.
Under Kerrey, the New School had difficulty putting humanistic and holistic theory into practice. When 20 students took over a building on campus demanding that Kerrey resign, the administration had a choice in dealing with the students:
Option no. 1: Negotiate as in the age of Obama. Understand the students, express empathy, talk, apologize, and reach a mutually agreeable conclusion which could be used as a learning experience.
Option no. 2: Nuke ’em. Call in the SEALs. Fire first, ask questions later. Liberate the hallways and classrooms from occupation. Mission accomplished.
Guess which option the New School chose? Option no. 2. Call the cops, arrest the bastards, and kick them the hell out of school:
More than 20 people occupied a building on the New School campus in Greenwich Village on Friday, demanding that the school’s embattled president, Bob Kerrey, be ousted. But unlike a similar protest in December that was peacefully negotiated to an end after 30 hours, Friday’s ordeal was concluded in a few hours after the school asked the police to remove the protesters.
Shortly after the protest began around 5:30 a.m., police officers surrounded the building, and by 11 a.m., several dozen police officers had lined up outside, carrying batons and with plastic handcuffs on their belts. At one point, the police said, about 20 officers went in….
Students involved in the occupation, many of whom were part of a group called New School in Exile, will be suspended, according to the statement.
Whatever else they were studying, these students obviously didn’t study history, as in Bob Kerrey’s history. They probably thought they were up against John Kerry.
