UCLA student sues over discipline tied to anti-Israel protests

UCLA doctoral student Dylan Kupsh is suing the university after spending 291 days barred from campus while the university pursued 14 disciplinary charges tied to his pro-Palestinian activism.

Kupsh’s petition says only two ultimately produced findings against him, and the remaining protest-related finding now underpins a two-quarter suspension that ended his teaching appointment and benefits.

Kupsh, a computer science doctoral student, filed the petition Aug. 26 in Los Angeles County Superior Court. He alleges UCLA targeted his viewpoint and denied him fair process while pursuing 14 charges arising from five incidents over two years.

The petition says UCLA imposed an interim suspension from June 6, 2025, through March 24, 2026 before any disciplinary panel found Kupsh responsible. Earlier proceedings rejected or dismissed most allegations, including claims that he organized demonstrations, blocked access, or disobeyed university and police directives. One earlier finding involved his failure to produce a physical BruinCard.

The final suspension centers on a Nov. 19, 2024, demonstration on Bruin Walk. A three-member Student Conduct Committee hearing panel found insufficient evidence that Kupsh organized the protest or failed to follow official directives, but concluded that he impeded pedestrian traffic after he did not reposition himself or a sign as a pedestrian approached.

Kupsh alleges UCLA never disclosed that theory before the hearing and that no written university policy imposed such an affirmative duty. His petition says Dean Rush approved a two-quarter suspension on June 15, running from June 22 through Dec. 11, 2026, and that his July 31 appeal failed.

The sanction cost Kupsh his guaranteed teaching assistant appointment for summer and fall 2026, along with salary, health insurance, and tuition remission, the filing says. It also alleges UCLA continues to withhold a master’s degree he submitted for conferral in December 2024 and that the suspension threatens completion of his doctorate.

If he wanted to avoid two years of investigation, perhaps he should have stopped committing “incidents” after his third. Maybe even his second.

“Protesting” Guessing there was quite a bit of rioting involved.

Screw’em.
