Florida Democratic Senate Nominee: It’s ‘Crazy’ I Have to Pay Back Taxes and Student Loan Debt

Socialist Angie Nixon, who scored a stunning upset victory over her establishment opponent, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary last month, campaigned on making the wealthy pay their fair share and supports a 5% annual wealth tax on billionaires. Yet when it comes to her own finances, Nixon says it’s “crazy” that she has to repay $17,600 in outstanding student loan debt and pay roughly $14,000 she owes in back taxes — even though her reported income totaled at least $270,000 in 2025.
According to The Washington Free Beacon, Nixon said, “I don’t wanna pay it back.”
The media outlet reported:
Her income … includes rent from one of her properties, her income as a state representative, her earnings from a Miami consulting firm, and her salary as the director of a nonprofit that works to mobilize black voters. Her income is likely even higher than reported because she is not required to publicly disclose the income earned by her husband, Jarrett Morene, who owns and operates what appears to be a car repair business.
During a July interview, Nixon said,
Your girl over here is on a payment plan to pay the IRS $12,000 back. And listen, I ain’t made $105 billion, but you making me pay $12,000 to the feds? Like, really? That’s what we’re doing? And they already took some of the taxes away anyway. I paid over $10,000. It’s just, it is crazy.
The Free Beacon also reported that in October 2023, when Congress ended the pandemic-era student loan moratorium, Nixon wrote on Facebook that she has no intentions of paying back her student loans: “Dear Student Loans. It’s above me now. I don’t wanna pay it back. Education supposed to be free.”
Thus, as a sitting member of the Florida House of Representatives, Nixon said she would not repay the student loans she had taken out to finance her education, arguing that “education supposed to be free.” Nearly three years later, now the Democratic Senate nominee, she is still carrying that debt — and publicly bristling at the government’s efforts to collect what she owes.
Although Senate candidates are required to disclose all liabilities of $10,000 or more, Nixon omitted both her outstanding student loan debt and her unpaid federal taxes from the financial disclosure form she filed in August.
Paul Kamenar, an attorney with the watchdog group National Legal and Policy Center, told the Free Beacon, “It’s clear Nixon violated the Senate disclosure rules. She needs to amend her reports.”
Nixon did not respond to the Free Beacon’s request for comment. But the questions for Nixon are straightforward: Why were two reportable debts omitted, and will she amend her disclosure to include them? For a candidate campaigning on financial accountability, voters may reasonably expect a clear explanation.
While Nixon’s loss in the general election to Republican incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody is all but assured, her sense of entitlement matters. Unless and until the United States embraces socialism, debts remain debts — and those who incur them are expected to repay them.

I know we don’t have debtor prisons, but at some point, doesn’t refusal to pay your debts become a crime? Isn’t that fraud?
No, it’s not fraud. None of the elements of fraud are present.
What happens if you refuse to pay your debts is that eventually the creditor (or more likely the debt collector to whom the creditor sold the debt at a discount) will sue you, get an order against you, and collect from your assets or your earnings. In this case the creditor is the federal government, which is its own debt collector, and is well positioned to collect money owed it. For instance she has that rental house; the government could seize it. Or it could seize her bank account.
Meh, the Feds should start selling the Student loan debt to motivated entrepreneurs with strict lending standards, high penalties/interest for non/under payment and vigorous collection methods. When Paulie Walnuts starts busting knees they’ll start coughing up what they owe.

OMG I paid my student loans off for 20 years, and just recently finished them off back in 2020. It’s called the gov’t invetsing in you and you paying them back. I have never amde anywhere near her salary and managed to pay off my loans and my spouses. Why would anyone wnat to elect a politician that has such bad financial sense, no discipline or sense of resposnbility and no understanding of basic economics?
