William Jewell College Football Player Dies Suddenly on Sideline

This is such sad news. A young man in the prime of his life.

William Jewell College mourning sudden passing of football player

William Jewell College is mourning the sudden loss of a football player Saturday, who died after experiencing a medical emergency on the sideline.

“William Jewell College and the Liberty community mourn the passing of MicahJo Barnett,” the college posted on social media Saturday afternoon. “Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, teammates, friends, coaches, and faculty and staff.”

Barnett was a junior business major at William Jewell College.

“We appreciate the response from the sheriff’s office, the police department, EMS team, physician for the team, everybody responded so quickly, so well,” William Jewell College Interim President Dr. Drew Van Horn said. “Our hearts are heavy and we just appreciate all the support that we have received from the greater community.”

William Jewell’s game Saturday against Fort Lewis in Liberty was suspended Saturday.

The Liberty Fire Department said the incident happened just before 12:30 p.m. An ambulance was requested to respond to the field sideline for a player who was experiencing a medical emergency. The player was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Barnett had six carries for 30 yards and a touchdown when play was suspended and with the Cardinal leading 7-0.

Teammates spoke to the media and reflected on the person that Barnett was and how they plan on continuing his legacy.

“It’s an honor to play for him, you know,” said Tatum Bethany, sophomore and wide receiver. “He’s always going to be with us regardless. So, we know he would want us to keep moving and keep pushing and play as hard as he would every day. “

William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett, 20, suffered a medical emergency and died shortly after scoring a touchdown during the team’s opening game.

I hope this wasn’t myocarditis. I really do. But so many young men are being diagnosed with it now.
