Warren Endorsee Peggy Flanagan Says She’d be First ‘Native Woman’ in Senate if Elected
“In almost 250 years, there’s never been a Native woman serving in the US Senate.”
In recent weeks, much national attention was paid to two primary races in the Midwest: the Wisconsin gubernatorial race between state Rep. Francesca Hong and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, and the Michigan Senate race between Rep. Haley Stevens (MI-11) and former Wayne County Health Department director Abdul El-Sayed.
Both races were seen as tests of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)’s power in statewide contests, with El-Sayed (who narrowly won) receiving the DSA’s backing and Hong, a DSA member who narrowly lost, endorsed by local DSA chapters.
But in Minnesota, the Senate primary race among Democrats featured another contest between Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, a far-left candidate, and Rep. Angie Craig (MN-02), viewed as a “moderate.”
Polling on this one mostly showed Flanagan with double-digit leads, and she ended up easily winning the nomination after running on an anti-ICE, anti-Trump platform and leaning in heavily on identity politics, including her Native American heritage.

Fundraising messages she would send out emphasized it:
In almost 250 years, there’s never been a Native woman serving in the US Senate.
I’m thinking of my daughter — who just got her first jingle dress — and whether or not she will see Indigenous women in all parts of our government.
After her primary victory, a DNC fundraising email that included a statement from her again highlighted that Flanagan would be the first “Native woman” in the Senate if elected.
But some X users were quick to point out that this was an inadvertent dig at Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), whose previous claims of Native American heritage were thoroughly exposed as falsehoods, something that was extensively documented on Prof. Jacobson’s Warren Wiki page, an effort that has been credited with aiding in the fall of her failed 2020 presidential campaign.

Flanagan will take on former NFL sportscaster Michele Tafoya, the GOP gubernatorial nominee, in the fall election. Tafoya has already come out swinging:
