Scott Wiener’s AI Attack on Opponent Backfires in Race to Replace Pelosi
The loathsome CA State Senator was accused of reinforcing sexist stereotypes after chatbot mimicked fellow Democrat and SF city supervisor Connie Chan.
The last time I wrote about the loathsome California State Senator Scott Wiener, the controversial San Francisco politician was pushing a ballot measure for a $23 billion climate slush fund paid for with my tax money.
My greatest worry was that he would essentially be crowned Nancy Pelosi’s replacement in the House of Representatives, as she is finally retiring. Wiener represents a special brand of toxic politician and has repeatedly drawn controversy for high-profile progressive legislation such as reforms to HIV criminalization and sex-offender-registration laws that protect perpetrators and increase the pool of potential victims.

The contest for California’s 11th Congressional District is now an open-seat race between two Democrats: Wiener and San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan. Wiener, sadly, is polling well. Wiener finished first in California’s June 2 jungle primary, with about 40.7%; Chan finished second with about 29.7%.
However, 40.7% is not 50%, and Wiener is not facing a Republican. Furthermore, Chan had Pelosi’s backing.
So Wiener turned to artificial intelligence (AI) to attack Chan during this phase of the election cycle.
The tactic earned Pelosi’s ire and is a fascinating example of Blue vs Blue conflict.
California state Sen. Scott Wiener launched the chatbot this week to mock fellow Democrat and city supervisor Connie Chan, who earned Pelosi’s endorsement. Wiener and Chan will face against each other in November for Pelosi’s seat.
The website ConnieChan.ai bills itself as “the world’s first AI trained to say no to anything you ask,” a knock on Chan’s reputation among critics as a progressive NIMBY who has opposed numerous housing proposals.
The Chan campaign unsurprisingly was not a fan of Wiener’s unique campaigning tactic. Pelosi then stepped in to echo her own fury over the tactic.
“Women have spent generations fighting to have our own voices heard in the halls of power. We should not have to now fight against artificial intelligence putting words in our mouths,” Pelosi said Thursday, releasing a long statement with the backing of numerous female elected officials.
The statement accuses Wiener for using AI to impersonate a female voice, which is a “gross misuse of technology and reflects a disturbing willingness to erase women’s agency.” It further claimed that because Chan is a non-white woman, such harms “compound with racial stereotypes.”

In fact, several Democratic Party entities were disturbed by the AI tactic.
In a joint statement attributed to Pelosi, members of Congress, San Francisco supervisors and local Democratic groups objected to AI being used to put words into a female candidate’s mouth.
…The group called the chatbot “a gross misuse of technology,” arguing that using AI to fabricate a woman’s voice for political ridicule could reinforce sexist stereotypes and undermine women in public life.
The coalition also warned that AI-generated impersonations could damage public trust and urged political candidates not to use the technology to strip women of their identity or agency for electoral gain.
The Wiener campaign has now pulled the chatbot.
State Sen. Scott Wiener, who is running to succeed former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Congress, announced Friday that his campaign is taking down the ConnieChan.ai parody chatbot and the billboards promoting it after acknowledging the effort “missed the mark.”
The chatbot was launched as a parody highlighting what Wiener said was his opponent Connie Chan’s record on housing, public transit and other issues. However, Wiener said the discussion surrounding the chatbot shifted attention away from the issues central to the campaign.
“My campaign created ConnieChan.ai as a parody to draw attention to my opponent’s record of delay and obstruction around housing, public transit, and other critical needs,” Wiener said in a statement. “Today, we are taking down the chatbot, and the billboards that promoted it will come down soon.”
Wiener said his campaign intended to engage voters in a new and innovative way, consistent with what he described as his history of pursuing ambitious policy initiatives.
Many were not impressed by this supposed act of contrition.

This latest Wiener failure was an opportunity for Chan’s campaign….which pounced!
“Scott Wiener can rightly take down his bigotry bot, but he can’t erase the concerns it raised among San Franciscans about his character and judgment,” wrote Chan’s spokesperson, Ian Krager, in a statement. “Connie Chan will keep her campaign focused on fighting for working families, affordable housing, reliable transit, and responsible AI — without turning San Francisco voters into a political experiment.”

The episode raises fresh questions about Wiener’s judgment and whether mockery-driven campaign stunts serve voters better than a substantive contest over policy and record. I certainly wish Chan tons of good luck, as I would prefer not to have Wiener gain power on a national scale.
It also underscores the need to be mindful of video use in the upcoming campaign cycle and ensure the evidence presented isn’t AI-enhanced.

If the AWFLs of the CA d/prog party don’t like Scott Wiener, why did they keep selecting this whacko to represent them in Sacramento? Why didn’t they not just withhold support for him but actively campaign him? Why didn’t they refuse to be props for any campaign ads and ‘look how a great a Senator I am’ PR boondoggles? The reason is they like him, supported him for raw political power and out of lefty/woke solidarity …so long as they didn’t have a different option come along who panders to them more effectively …and not coming across as insulting/upsetting potential voters is definitely better.

If I heard that Weiner introduced legislation, even without details, I opposed it. I remember 1 or 2 exceptions, and those were cases where every member of the legislature should have supported that legislation.
