Georgetown Federal Work-Study Comes With Required DEI Training

Georgetown social justice center requires race course for Federal Work-Study students
Georgetown University’s Center for Social Justice offers more than 200 undergraduate positions each academic year, many through Federal Work-Study.
Federal Work-Study participants must complete a course titled “Critical Conversations on Race.”
Federal Work-Study, authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act, funds part-time employment for eligible students with financial need. Under most arrangements, the federal share may cover up to 75 percent of a student’s wages, with the employer providing the remainder.
While the Department of Education has broad guidelines for student work-study positions, it does not expressly regulate on-campus jobs that are potentially political or ideological.
Many of the Center for Social Justice’s job opportunities require applicants to be eligible for Federal Work-Study.
Students who are part of the center’s operations team provide “essential behind-the-scenes infrastructure for EngageDC programs, community-based learning courses, engaged research, student organizations, staff-directed initiatives, and racial justice work.”
Student Academic Assistants with the center assist faculty members who are teaching a course related to “social justice, community-engaged, or community-based learning” or are working on a project with “social justice implications.”
Both position categories require students to be eligible for Federal Work-Study.
In addition to this requirement, Center for Social Justice students using Federal Work-Study must complete a program called “Critical Conversations on Race.”
“This dialogue series centered on race is the critical first step in the process of building awareness, knowledge, and skills to create impactful change,” a description says.
Students will examine topics such as “navigating microaggressions and triggers,” “the cycle of socialization and the cycle of liberation,” “implicit bias and privilege,” “understanding the differences among diversity, equity, and inclusion,” and “white supremacy culture and the social change ecosystem.”
