FAA’s Gamer Recruitment Campaign Scores Over 2,000+ Air Traffic Controller Candidates

FAA’s Gamer Recruitment Campaign Scores Over 2,000+ Air Traffic Controller Candidates

Hopefully, the rest of the FAA’s air traffic control enhancement plan will prove as successful.

Back in April, I noted that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began searching for a few good gamers to hire as air traffic controllers.

In an innovative ad campaign, the FAA explicitly called for gamers to apply for jobs in air traffic control.

It appears that the campaign was a YUGE success.

US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy reported on Sunday, Aug. 9, that 94% of the hiring goal has been met, with the most ever employed in a single year.

He wrote in a social media post: “2,000+ “best & brightest” candidates in the pipeline — reaching the Academy quicker than any class before them, thanks to the most streamlined hiring process.”

Duffy added in his post on X: “In April, we launched a NEW CAMPAIGN to recruit video gamers as air traffic controllers — and supercharged the entire hiring process to get the BEST & BRIGHTEST in faster. The results are HISTORIC.”

Interviews with some of the candidates make it seem like this is a match made in heaven.

Comments from them included “This is my dream career because I think ATC is the coolest thing ever,” “You can merge aviation with gaming, why not? It’s like the best of both worlds,” and “I grew up playing a lot of flight simulators, I’ve always loved airplanes.”

In April, it was stated that there were almost 11,000 controllers in service, with more than 4,000 trainees in the pipeline.

“We’re building the strongest, sharpest workforce in aviation history,” Duffy added on X.

The move to recruit air traffic controllers from video gamers was part of a broader plan to eliminate the staffing shortage by accelerating hiring. The goal is to have 12,563 fully certified controllers, compared with roughly 11,000 that were deployed this spring, while improving training completion, assignments to high-need facilities, scheduling, and staffing models.

The plan also emphasizes modernizing the National Airspace System with updated technology, simulators, AI-enabled traffic management, and measures to reduce controller overtime, fatigue, and airspace complexity.

  • Continue our record-speed move to provide controllers with modern, 21st century technology and equipment.
  • Improve airspace optimization and reduce airspace complexity by deconflicting airline scheduling to smooth traffic flow and maximize efficient use of airspace through new technology.
  • Expand advanced simulator-based training, which can increase proficiency and reduce new-controller training times by up to 27 percent.
  • Use artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to better simulate and manage NAS performance before the day of departure. That will improve routing efficiency and traffic management to reduce airspace complexity and increase overall situational awareness across the system.

The FAA’s rapid recruitment of more than 2,000 motivated, qualified candidates based on something other than race and gender identity is an encouraging early sign that an unconventional outreach strategy can help address a long-standing controller shortage.

The ultimate measure of success, however, will be whether those candidates complete rigorous training and become fully certified controllers at the facilities where they are most needed.

Hopefully, the rest of the FAA’s air traffic control enhancement plan- everything from simulator-based training and modernized equipment to smarter scheduling and traffic-management tools- will prove just as successful as their recruitment campaign.

Personally, I would love much less drama and stress when I fly!

Comments

Remember. No straffing runs or flyovers.

They all look 20 years old

But that was the average pilot age in WW2 in the start

Let’s roll

Youth will not be denied

Recruiting is the first step. Then selection and training. Many of the gamers will be have transferable skills. The pressure/stress/workload of an ATC may not be so easy to take.

I’m sure the plan is to have them work out of their moms’ basement at first.

      I’m not so sure
These kids want good paying jobs

They seem very proud to have come this far

Lots of people play video games besides the stereotypical ‘lives in the basement, eating Cheetos and hot pockets, drinking Mountain Dew’.

Gamers manage multiple scenarios while talking on the phone and posting on tik tok. They will thrive while collecting a paycheck.

After East Palestine, Buttigeig tried to do the same for trains, but the only people who applied were boomers in weird costumes.

“We never had a group perform that well.” That key statement was at the end of the video. The FAA has returned to hiring based on merit. What a concept — maybe merit will catch on for all federal hiring.

Gamers are mostly young men. As Gonzotx noted, they are mostly in their twenties, so they are the Covid generation that lost out on football games, proms, and old-fashioned hanging out. This is the generation that got left behind. I am happy to see a call to service directly to this group. If anyone has watched gamers in action, their level of concentration for many hours is outstanding. This is a match made in heaven and it will be very successful.

But, but, how can this be?! Those with a highly techncial learned and trained skill set are more adept at meeting job criteria than their race and gender to be air traffic controllers? I shant believe this non-woke preposterous folly!

Will they be allowed to use profanities while they stay “calm”?

I shared an office with a guy who did ATC in the reserves.

Staring at a screen and being able to watch multiple things evolving at once and being able to process those things evolving were key skills.

MMP gaming is like the perfect incubator for this.

Interesting how they QUIETLY dispensed with the crooked exam that was handed out to all the black grifters so thugs could get the job while excluding any upwardly mobile white kids.
