The North Atlantic “Cold Blob” and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Collapse Hype

The latest hype underscores the need for measured analysis grounded in evidence rather than headline-driven conclusions presented by people whose funding and power are linked to narrative outcomes.

Just when climate alarmists had you convinced the planet was incinerating, scientists are now pivoting their doomsday narrative to a mysterious “cold blob” lurking in the North Atlantic — and this time, they’re warning of global cooling, collapsing ocean currents, and apocalyptic scenarios straight out of The Day After Tomorrow.

Legal Insurrection readers may recall a story I wrote late last year on the “New Ice Age“. It featured a reference to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, which is a “conveyor belt of the ocean” that funnels warm water toward the ocean surface — from the tropics to the Northern Hemisphere.

There was a paper that argued Greenland’s glaciers are melting so much that its cold waters are dumping into the Atlantic, which may cause a collapse of the AMOC…and, subsequently, a new ice age.

In other words, global warming is leading to global cooling. This stance was subsequently refuted by meteorologist Chris Martz.

But climate cultists never rest.

So, there is a new study published in Geophysical Research Letters by Stefan Rahmstorf and colleagues at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research that claims that this chilly anomaly south of Greenland is the “fingerprint” of a weakening AMOC. As we’ve seen before, the climate panic industry has a remarkable talent for finding catastrophe in every season.

It seems cooling oceans are now just as terrifying as warming ones.

It’s the attack of the “chiller blob”.

While climatologists fear skyrocketing temperatures, scientists are now warning that a “cold blob” in the Atlantic could trigger a global cooling event, among other apocalyptic scenarios, per an alarming study in Geophysical Research Letters.

Located South of Greenland and Iceland, this anomalous patch of ocean has seen temps dip by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit since the 19th Century, Science News reported.

Coincidentally, this comes as the United Nations’ influential climate change committee has discarded dire temperature increase models spouted by doomsdayers on the Left.

The meltwater from former glaciers is very cold, but it’s also freshwater rather than salty, so it floats on the surface. This input then affects the nature of the circulation, theoretically leading to heat waves.

Because the cold blob is so big, it also affects the air above it. The jet stream, a fast-flowing current of air flowing from west to east, hits the cold blob and is forced to go around it. “That’s when you get these heat dumps and cold snaps, where it hits the bottom and then it creates a wave in the jet stream that passes over Europe,” says Dr De Mora. “That’s what’s so scary about the cold blob – it has this huge impact on everything around it.”

In the shorter term, the cold blob could, despite its name, lead to more heatwaves in the UK, says Dr Dafydd Gwyn Evans, a senior research scientist in physical oceanography at the National Oceanography Centre. He’s been part of a paper that related the cooling in the subpolar North Atlantic to extreme European heat waves. “Essentially, the gradient in temperature of the ocean affects the path of the jet stream and how far north or south it flows over the continent,” he says. “The tendency is for us to have more extreme summer heat waves with this cold blob in the subpolar gyre.”

However, in the longer term, there is the potential for the climate in northern Europe to get much colder due to the blob.

However, nothing in this report changes the conclusions from my previous analysis:

In a nutshell, the AMOC is stable and collapse is unlikely to happen quickly or without extraordinary conditions. For example, using air-sea heat flux as an indicator, another team of researchers found no evidence of AMOC weakening between 1963 and 2017. Many climate models only show an AMOC collapse if much more freshwater is added to the Atlantic than occurred even during massive past ice sheet melts, and such model collapses usually take several hundred years to appear.

I find it very worthwhile to spend a few moments looking at the institute that supported this research.

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is a German government-funded research institute that combines Earth system science, economics, and policy analysis to study projected climate change impacts and the government controls that can be implemented. Its five departments — Earth System Analysis, Climate Resilience, Transformation Pathways, Complexity Science, and Climate Economics and Policy —are cooked up from a social justice recipe with a hint of science for “credibility”.

PIK’s high-profile 2024 Nature study claiming $38 trillion in annual climate damages was subjected to peer criticism, found to contain data errors and flawed statistical methodology — with one peer reviewer writing it had “no scientific basis whatsoever” — and was ultimately retracted in December 2025.

The German climate science blog Klimanachrichten published a detailed critique in March 2026 accusing PIK of cherry-picking data, misusing tipping-point concepts as “psychological tools to instill fear,” and concluding that “the institute has moved away from objective science and toward political activism.”

And given the state of both the German energy grid and economy, any recommendations offered must be viewed with extreme skepticism.

Ultimately, the so‑called North Atlantic “cold blob” appears less like definitive evidence of impending climate catastrophe and more like another evolving piece of a highly complex ocean–atmosphere system that scientists are still working to understand. While it may influence regional weather patterns and warrant continued study, claims of imminent AMOC collapse or dramatic global cooling remain speculative and unsupported by long-term observational data.

As with past climate alarms, the cold blob underscores the need for measured analysis grounded in evidence, rather than headline-driven conclusions from people whose funding and power are tied to narrative outcomes.

A few years ago it was fear that Greenland’s ice cap would “collapse” (a nonsense word – glaciers and snowfields do not “collapse” and even calving is evidence that a glacier is advancing, which is a sign of healthy snow mass upstream – a glacier disappears by retreating, not “collapsing” or calving). That scare included statistics showing millions of tons of melt coming off the cap, demonstrating that cap’s demise was in the making. A little research showed that similar amounts of water were being deposited (as snow) on the cap, almost precisely balancing the loss to melting.

This is just another such scare. When you run an outfit with a name like “Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research,” your research had better show “impacts” or you would lose your funding pronto.

    Yes and a self regulating system at that. Do humans add to the ‘change’? Sure and its dumb to say we don’t but the real questions are the amount/scale of human impact and whether the self regulating system of ‘climate’ can absorb the level of human impact. I’d argue that the relative scale of human impact is negligible and the self regulating system of climate is/has been successfully dealing with it.

    I’ve long thought that the folks most susceptible to ‘climate hysteria’ and most worried about human impacts are those who’ve lost the plot about the relative importance of humanity in our world. These folks elevated humanity above all else and lost touch with the supremacy of God if one is religious or the natural world if not.

They should be happy, this will get them below the magic death to the world heating index.

Nature has managed to create a “feedback loop” as rising temperatures causes glaciers to melt, the run off freshwater reduces the strength of the AMOC which lowers the temperature thus reducing glacier melting which reduces the freshwater runoff which makes AMOC stronger again … and this loop continues to some equilibrium point.
