U.S. Conducts Retaliatory Strikes Against Iran as Diplomatic Talks Continue

President Trump: “There was no damage done to the three Destroyers, but great damage done to the Iranian attackers.”

The U.S. launched overnight retaliatory strikes against military targets in Iran following an attack on three American destroyers in the Strait of Hormuz.

“The U.S. military said it carried out retaliatory strikes on Iran on Thursday, targeting sites it said were responsible for attacking U.S. forces in what it called ‌unprovoked hostilities by Tehran,” Reuters reported. “No U.S. military assets were hit by the Iranians, the U.S. military said.”

The Iranian attack came even as the U.S. on Tuesday paused Project Freedom, a naval mission to restore commercial shipping in the Hormuz Strait. This marks the second reported Iranian attack on U.S. Naval assets since President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire 31 days ago.

President Trump described the U.S. retaliatory strike as a ‘love tap,’ maintaining that the ceasefire remains in place while talks with Tehran continue.

“Three World Class American Destroyers just transited, very successfully, out of the Strait of Hormuz, under fire. There was no damage done to the three Destroyers, but great damage done to the Iranian attackers,” the president confirmed on Truth Social.

The Iranian attackers “were completely destroyed along with numerous small boats, which are being used to take the place of their fully decapitated Navy,” he added.

Centcom disclosed the details of the retaliatory strike in a statement:

U.S. forces intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with self-defense strikes as U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman, May 7.

Iranian forces launched multiple missiles, drones and small boats as USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), and USS Mason (DDG 87) transited the international sea passage. No U.S. assets were struck.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) eliminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking U.S. forces including missile and drone launch sites; command and control locations; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes.

CENTCOM does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces.

The Iranian military and state-controlled media confirmed multiple U.S. strikes, targeting the regime and the Islamic Guard-owned oil and infrastructure targets.

“Iranian news agencies said that “several explosions” were heard near the Iranian city of Bandar Abbas, with commercial parts of a pier in Qeshm – the largest island in the Gulf – being “targeted”,” the BBC reported. “Iran’s top military command alleged the US targeted an Iranian oil tanker moving towards the strait, as well as another vessel entering the strait opposite the Emirati port of Fujaira.”

According to the broadcaster, “explosions were heard in several cities” across Iran.

The U.S. armed forces on Friday disable two Iranian oil tankers attempting to breach a three week-old maritime blockade. President Trump ordered the blockade to cripple the regime’s lucrative energy export.

CNBC News reported Friday afternoon:

The U.S. military said it struck two Iran-flagged unladen oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, preventing the vessels from entering an Iranian port in violation of a U.S. naval blockade.

A U.S. fighter jet “disabled both tankers after firing precision munitions into their smokestacks,” U.S. Central Command said in a statement, which included unclassified video of both strikes.

In a flagrant breach of the ceasefire, Iran launched further airstrikes against the neighboring UAE. “United Arab Emirates says its air defenses are intercepting drone and missile fire as Iran war’s ceasefire challenged,” ABC News reported Friday morning.

Pretending there’s a deal coming with Iran is wishful thinking. They are stalling the talks just like always.

Even if they agree to the so-called 14 point plan, they’ll renig on it as soon as it behooves them. Probably right after they rearm.

Take out the ports so no tankers can dock. Then, when the faux peace takes effect, they’ll still be able to load those tankers, but it will take a lot longer and be a royal pain in the butt for them.

Make them regret their hostilities for years to come.

There is no deal to be made. Only wishful thinking.

Zero patience for this 3 week war thats now 10 weeks in.

We’ve ceded control of the straight of Hormuz to them. wtf. Meanwhile.. food and gas prices are up and you’re starting to see “I did this” Trump stickers on gas pumps even in rural West Virginia.

The hammering that’s coming for the GOP in November maybe the bloodiest midterms in decades.

I have zero patience for ignorant commenters intent on undermining US efforts to save the world from the threat of a nuclear armed Iran. An Iran which is on the verge of economic extinction. We have not and will not cede control to these somali pirate wannabes. Perhaps you need to reread the above article? Imagine what these pirates would do if they had nuclear weapons? That would be ceding control. That was Obama. Maybe that’s what you want. (And gas prices vary, and are dramatically higher in DEMOCRAT states with DEMOCRAT tax and climate grift policies)

Gas prices still aren’t as high as when Biden and the dems were running things.

Meh. To get things done, you have to be in power. At this rate, the Dems will be in charge of both the house and senate come Jan. Good luck getting a conservative Supreme Court Justice confirmed.

We will be long dead before that happens.

Meh. Is that what Obama was doing when he funded Iran’s nuclear ambitions? Getting things done? The US Navy has taken stock of the Iranian pirates and is currently rectifying the situation. As for politics, perhaps you have missed the redistricting news. Good luck with exploiting race issues to manipulate congressional districts in the future.

So what step do you want to take next? Please tell us how the U.S. should proceed from here.

dwb in reply to Hodge. | May 8, 2026 at 9:36 am

Open the god-d straight and remove any leverage Iran has.

Irans game is delay, thinking Trump is falling into a “quagmire.”

The biggest risk from day one is loss of political will. Trump is feeding that impression with repeatedly postponing the end of the cease fire. He is under the missapprehension that Iran wants a deal. They dont. They want to run out the clock and tire us out.

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to Hodge. | May 8, 2026 at 9:46 am

There’s nothing much that the United States can do at this point since Trump has made such a mess of this conflict. The Trump administration will just have to ride it out through the Nov. 2026 midterm elections and hope that Republicans can keep control of the House and Senate. Which isn’t guaranteed to happen though I hope it will.

If you’dve been around during WWII, you’dve moved to Cuba already.

Let’s see $5/gallon gas vs nuclear Iran

It’s admirable that PDJT and his team are attempting negotiations with the Iranian regime, or whatever is left of it…but I think the only way to deal with these lunatics is to just keep destroying their military assets and their enrichment facilities…just keep visiting brute force and destruction upon them without any mercy or pause, because that’s the only thing they understand.

The fanatical Iranians now are no different that the fanatical Japanese during WW2. You can not negotiate with them. You can not make a deal with them. I don’t think Trump understands this and as a result he is undermining his own efforts.

This isn’t an argument for using nuclear weapons. What it is an argument for wholesale killing of the members of the clergy and their praetorian guard until those remaining unconditionally surrender or there are none left. None that I’m arguing for killing the people causing the problem and not the infrastructure of the country unless they happen to be co-located.
