California Mayoral Candidate Calls on City’s 55 Gang Leaders to Help Expel ICE
“I expect a gang leader from every gang … I’m calling the Latino gangs. I’m calling the Cambodian gangs. I’m calling the Filipino gangs. … “
Long Beach, California, mayoral candidate Rogelio Martinez has rolled out a controversial new plan to drive ICE agents out of the city. In an amateurish and borderline farcical campaign video, Martinez called on the city’s 55 gang leaders to unite against federal law enforcement.
Standing in front of Long Beach City Hall, he said he was “calling all 55 gangs in my beautiful city. I expect a gang leader from every gang. … I’m calling the Latino gangs. I’m calling the Cambodian gangs. I’m calling the Filipino gangs. I’m calling the black gangs. I’m calling the Pacific Islander gangs.
“I’m calling all gang leaders to meet me right here … this coming Monday… I need you to be here to meet me in person to take back this city. Because our leadership isn’t doing anything about it, and our police are powerless.”
He insisted that he wants this done “peacefully, but with strong force. … Enough is enough.”
Martinez rambled on. He repeated his call to action and explained that this is the only way he knows how to get ICE out of Long Beach.
I’m not quite sure which was more breathtaking: the insanity of this idea or Martinez’s naïve belief that any gang leader would actually show up to his meeting.
Twitter influencer @CynicalPublius posted the video with the caption, “When criminal gangs start working for Leftist government, you’ve just made @KurtSchlichter into a modern day Nostradamus.”
A commentary writer for Townhall, Schlichter has warned about similar scenarios in his novels.

Although President Donald Trump increased his margins in Long Beach from 22.5% in 2016 to 30.5% in 2024, the city’s electorate — like much of California — remains deeply blue.
With no official candidates yet declared in the city’s mayoral race, it is unclear whether Martinez has any realistic path to victory. Still, it is striking that any prospective candidate would openly campaign on enlisting gang leaders to help expel federal agents from a U.S. city.
Local media outlet Long Beach Classic has recently begun publishing a series of profiles of likely mayoral candidates, with Martinez featured first. While I may be reading too much into their decision to lead with Martinez, it nonetheless suggests his candidacy is being taken seriously.
Asked why he was running, Martinez said he wants his grandsons to grow up knowing that if their grandfather could take on such a big challenge, there’s nothing beyond their reach.
Martinez, who has never run for public office, takes enormous pride in his city, which he described as “one of the best in America, not because of any single feature, but because of its people.”
The experience that has shaped him the most was “spending time going through the homelessness system himself to understand how it actually works. Rather than studying it from the outside, Martinez chose to experience it firsthand. What he found, he says, was a system filled with gaps that can easily push people into long-term homelessness.”
When asked what frustrated him about the city, “he spoke about industrial properties and vacant buildings that sit neglected for years, becoming magnets for fires, overdoses, and emergency calls that cost the city money while worsening homelessness and public safety.”
There was nothing particularly noteworthy in his profile. It made no mention of his proposal to rid the city of ICE agents.
Who knows? His novel approach may resonate with voters in this progressive city.
And while X accounts, American AF, and Cynical Publius are both conservative, Martinez’s campaign video sparked outrage among their followers. Here are a few of the most memorable responses:
Can anyone explain the difference between using street gangs to forward your political ideology and using blackshirts or brown shirts? pic.twitter.com/ARFt9ud6BR

It is the most Long Beach thing I’ve heard today. The rep who represents Long Beach is the product of parents who came here illegally. The city right by me used to be so pretty; now it is a cesspool of illegal aliens and crime. He stands a good shot of being elected.

No doubt. No matter how insane @KurtSchlichter makes the left in his books, real life leftists one up him.

Martinez may see his campaign as an act of civic pride or personal conviction, but his call to involve gang leaders in confronting federal law enforcement crosses the line. Whether it’s a publicity stunt or he actually believes the idea could work, this episode reflects a growing willingness by the Left to blur the boundaries between governance and criminality.

Sounds insurrectiony…
Sounds Vaccinated… 🙂
Sounds very conspiracy-to-violate-federal-law-ish to me. Meet them there and arrest them all. Anybody FA, make them FO with brutal efficiency. Time to end this sh*t.
Great idea but Kash would never do that
Why not?
Insurgency. All the gang leaders in one place? Grab them all at one time.
this episode reflects a growing willingness by the Left to blur the boundaries between governance and criminality.
There’s a difference between the two these days?
If the Mayoral candidate is just considered as exercising his free speech rights, the actualization of his demands by anyone, be they gang leaders or professional rioters, would make them Insurrectionists. President Trump would be well within Constitutional law to declare that are in rebellion, and to dispatch federal troops to put down the rebellion.
If he were an elected official, you’d have a good point.
But right now, he’s just a private-party blowhard.
I don’t think you need to be an elected official to engage in insurrection or rebellion.
You don’t, but you’d be wasting your time on one yutz when you really want to hammer an entire blue county, state, or what have you.
Well, I look forward to a bunch of dead gang bangers.
Probably a two-fer in many cases…
Isn’t there a crime here somewhere?
Some nice city you have there with 55 gangs.
I lived in Lakewood (the city just north of Long Beach) for 20 years and went to college at Cal State LB. I know whereof I speak when I say the corruption and incompetence of that city is absolutely legendary. That it has 55 gangs vs. a population of under half a million does not surprise me in the least.
The brave soldier of the left should head out into the streets and join the 55 gangs in their attack on federal officials with strong force of course. Why if he is even lucky he might be martyred for the cause.
Let Martinez put his money where his mouth is, or rather, put his body where his mouth is.

‘With so much drama in the L-B-C, it’s kinda tough …’
…bein Snoop D-O double G
No Snoop Dog fans?
He’s on my long list, right below Baby Shark.
“I’m not quite sure which was more breathtaking: the insanity of this idea or Martinez’s naïve belief that any gang leader would actually show up to his meeting.”
Or my naive belief that the FBI would bother to show up to his meeting.
From what I understand, Rogelio Martinez is running as a Democrat, which places him in the California political mainstream rather than on the fringes. Two points. First, does not his candidacy make it reasonable for both individuals and both small and large businesses to consider relocation? Second, the question was asked above in the X-Post, “Can anyone explain the difference between using street gangs to forward your political ideology and using blackshirts or brown shirts?”. The answers are discipline and costume designers.
Subotai Bahadur
I’m guessing his campaign is funded by the Soros machine.
It’s Southern California. Now really, who’s surprised at this?
.
Not striking at all – and pretty tame compared to what is going on elsewhere. Virginia just willingly and happily elected an AG who boasted about wanting to kill the children of a Republican opponent. Maine will very likely elect a virulently antisemitic Senator to replace the hapless Susan Collins. Backed by #Resistance Federal judges who have overturned the Constitution to give him the authority, Governor Walz has openly talked about using the Minnesota Guard in military action against the Federal government. Other mayors and governors of deep blue sh*tholes are using government resources (funded by taxpayers) to target Federal agents for assassination.
Meanwhile – where is the GOP? Seventeen Republicans House members decided saving Obamacare was the #1 national priority and voted to extend Obamacare subsidies. Senators Tillis and Murkowski are focused laser-like on getting rid of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. The GOP Senate has been slow-walking Trump appointees. GOP Senators and Representatives are floating the idea of mass amnesty before this November. A “do nothing” GOP would actually be an improvement over what we have now.
Your examples above of the “Ideological Lie” in operation are correct. Check out Daniel Mahoney (The Totalitarian Impulse Then and Now).
Yes, the GOP is collectively useless.
Doesn’t it seem like we are all just watching a play with a pre-determined outcome? Democrats spend most of their time and money finding ways to game the system in every imaginable way, while the hapless Republicans pretend to be incensed and boast about what needs to be done. But little gets done — it’s just a show. Then they all go off happily with the millions they’ve made from lobbyists and taxpayer-funded NGOs. What a racket. “All the world’s a stage…”
Fifty-five gangs. Is this marxist meat puppet sure it’s 55, not 52, or 63? How did he arrive at this 55 number? Regardless, this sounds mighty insurrection-y to me.
“How did he arrive at this 55 number?”
His Rolodex.
“this episode reflects a growing willingness by the Left to blur the boundaries between governance and criminality.”
There are no boundaries. Fraudulent elections, graft, perjury, assault – all documented actions by leftists in office.
Of course, Aiding and Abetting Martinez will be on the front lines with those gang leaders, leading the insurrection against law enforcement, right?
What? You mean he’s going to be hiding in city hall, making more pompous speeches?
Disqualify the Mayoral candidate from running. Arrest him and any gang leaders who show up.
Long Beach has some beautiful hundred year old neighborhoods filled with stately mansions as well as cute bungalows. but if you wander too far east you’ll be in the ghetto. The area surrounding the downtown Walmart is zombieland.
Long Beach leaders have abandoned order and prosperity for the egalitarianism of low expectations. This mope is a living example.
LOL. Does the mayor think the gangs will stop once they’ve been given carte blanche to quell ICE operations? They should go after the hand that fed them next…
that female city council member did so last year and was rewarded why wouldnt he do the same
good move chico
governments have been paying gang members to keep the peace as just another form of welfare /laundering money
america circles the drain
Meanwhile… this is what a state with ADULT leadership does:
“Senate Bill 1055, requiring local law enforcement agencies to notify federal immigration authorities when arresting illegal immigrants, advanced out of committee Monday in the Arizona Legislature…”
And it will be vetoed once it hits Katie Hobbs’ desk. Her handler, Adrian Fontes, will never allow that.
I’m assuming it’s a sacrificial bill to deliberately blacken Katie in time for the next election.
