Severe backlogs could prevent 150,000 international students from getting visas in time to start the fall semester, an estimated 30 to 40 percent drop in new foreign enrollments. That would be on par with precipitous declines in 2020, when the pandemic closed borders and halted travel. Much of this year’s falloff is attributable to a three-week halt in the scheduling of student-visa interviews during the busiest time of the year for student applicants as well as to changes in visa policy and practices since President Trump took office.NAFSA: Association of International Educators and JB International, New Research: U.S. Economy Could Suffer a Loss of $7 Billion and 60,000 Jobs:Scenario modeling based on a potential 30-40 percent decline in new international student enrollment in the United States this fall could result in a 15 percent drop in overall enrollment.
