The New York Times dropped a bombshell on New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani yesterday, reporting that the far left socialist identified as black on his application to Columbia University.
Lots of people on Twitter/X were immediately reminded of Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who famously identified as a Native American for years, to advance her academic career.

NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani identified as Black, Asian on Columbia application: report
Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, identified as “Black or African American” on his 2009 Columbia University application even though he now says he does not consider himself Black, The New York Times reported Thursday.
According to The Times, the internal data came from a leaked database of past Columbia applications which was part of a recent hack targeting the Ivy League school.
Mamdani, then a high school senior, also checked “Asian” and reportedly wrote in “Ugandan” in the space for additional background. He was ultimately not accepted to Columbia even though his father is a professor at the elite school.
Now 33, Mamdani told The Times he identifies as “an American who was born in Africa,” and said checking multiple boxes was an effort to reflect his “complex background,” not to gain an edge in the competitive admissions process.
But at the time, Columbia, like many elite universities, used race-conscious admissions, a system the Supreme Court struck down in 2023.
“Even though these boxes are constraining,” Mamdani said, “I wanted my college application to reflect who I was.”
Mamdani told The Times that aside from those college forms, he doesn’t recall ever identifying as Black or African American.

Zohran is trying to spin his misrepresentation of his racial background as if he was saying that he was an African who is American.
But at the time he applied to Columbia, he was nine years off from his U.S. citizenship.

Incumbent NYC Mayor Eric Adams, who is black, has already responded.

Adams was appalled by Mamdani’s actions, especially for skirting around the system in “an insult to every student who got into college the right way.”
“The African American identity is not a checkbox of convenience. It’s a history, a struggle and a lived experience. For someone to exploit that for personal gain is deeply offensive,” Hizzoner, who is black, said in a statement.
His campaign went a step further, accusing Mamdani of possibly having taken away an admission offer from a true African American applicant.
“It’s now clear that Zohran Mamdani misrepresented his racial identity to gain admission to Columbia University, and at the time, he wasn’t even a US citizen. This is not just dishonest — it’s possibly fraudulent. It may have taken a place away from a qualified African American applicant and misused a process designed to correct real, systemic inequities,” campaign spokesperson Todd Shapiro charged in the statement.

What always amazed me is how many leftists do this, then later run for some office and get caught at it. In fact, I get the impression that most of them get caught at it. Which always makes me wonder — where did Obama get the kind of pull it takes to lock every one of his records up tighter than Joe Biden’s garage?
I don’t think so. He did two years at Occidental College and transferred to Columbia as a junior. Obviously, he didn’t have the scores to get into COlumbia, so I don’t know what he did, but I doubt it was lying. He had some benefactor pull him through, most likely, as with Harvard Lawn Care School. People mention the black muslim friend of the family who had some connection to Saudi investment money, but it’s all pretty murky.
What makes these demographic tests so ridiculous are cases like Mamdani. He does have documentation that he was born in Uganda. He is now an American citizen. So then he must be an African-American – as with the richest man on the planet Elon Musk. But that was not the envisioned need for the category Likewise his mother is Indian so he can correctly claim that he is an Asian-American. He has far greater claim to those demographic groups than Elizabeth Warren ever did for membership as an American Indian. But the real question: Should membership in these groups grant him any privileges over someone whose ancestry can be traced to Europe? Clearly no.
Nor should any other group membership. But back in those days it was the game we played.
Interesting read, but none of this matters. The Democratic nominee is going to be the next mayor. Period.

The argument in your favor is that Pocahontas still beat incumbent Scott Brown after her story was splashed onto the Massachusetts press. Maybe leftist voters are so cynical they look at that and respect the gameplayer.

Mamdani is a Shia Muslim i.e. Ayatollah follower, born in Africa (Uganda) to Indian parents. He thus qualifies as African (born), Asian, Shiite, and now an American citizen – assuming this wasn’t fraudulently acquired. To deny he’s African-American is to assert a narrow (Leftist) definition of who is permitted to claim an African identity – Negro only, except that term is no longer PC or Woke so … Thus Musk, despite being African born and bred, now African-American thanks to acquiring citizenship, is not permitted to claim to be African because racism.
