Nearly 1 Million Illegal Immigrants Self-Deport Under Trump as Wages Rise
“More than a million foreign-born workers have exited the workforce since March.”
Although ICE raids grab headlines, a quieter Trump-era tactic, encouraging illegal immigrants to leave voluntarily, may be having an even larger effect.
Since retaking office, Trump has advanced a two-pronged immigration strategy: direct enforcement and a cheaper, voluntary departure program. Early indicators show the latter may be even more effective. In an op-ed in the New York Post, Andrew Arthur, the Resident Fellow in Law and Policy at the nonpartisan Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), wrote:
“DHS can’t arrest and deport 15.4 million illegal aliens, but if it simply enforces the law, many aliens will get the message and leave on their own — as hundreds of thousands apparently already have.”
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem rebranded Biden’s CBP One app into “CBP Home,” allowing migrants to notify authorities of their departure and claim a $1,000 stipend, a fraction of the $17,000 cost of forced removal.
The results are already showing up in labor data. The Washington Post noted:
“More than a million foreign-born workers have exited the workforce since March.”
Though the Post framed it as a “weakening labor supply,” it also noted a wage spike:
“Average hourly wages accelerated, rising by 0.4 percent over the month, to $36.24 in May, as earnings continue to beat inflation in a boost to workers’ spending power.”
CIS also pointed to a 773,000 drop in the immigrant population during Trump’s first four months, an early sign the policy is working.
“With fewer illegal immigrants, businesses have had to raise wages to attract workers.”
The strategy relies on credibility. With 207,000 deportations already logged and enforcement targeting employers, officials say deterrence is kicking in.
“Aliens will only leave if they believe Trump and [border czar Tom] Homan are serious about arrests, and employers know the feds are targeting shady businesses.”
Historical precedent supports the shift. “When President Dwight Eisenhower launched his deportation roundup in 1954, nearly 10 aliens left voluntarily for each one arrested,” Arthur noted.
Trump officials say they’re not just enforcing immigration law — they’re changing the calculus for those who broke it.

I’ve toyed with the idea of offering a path to citizenship in exchange for:
1. A term of helping to build the border wall
2. Turning in a certain number of illegals. First come, first serve.
Things would change dramatically.
Remove the incentives to stay by ruthlessly going after workplace enforcement. Hold the employers accountable who hire and pay off the books and yes ‘Big AG’ especially the food processing giants will raise hell. As will the hospitality industry and probably construction trade groups. Tough cookies, tell them to pound sand. Better yet shove E verify (enhanced with IRS, SSA, Medicare data) down their throat or other orifice by getting legislation to make it mandatory. Revoke all the ‘work permits’ for non green card and non work visa holders. Then if they keep whining start applying civil asset forfeiture to lock up the plant, equipment used in commission of their crimes. If they keep whining, use RICO on their SR management and board members.
Then put teeth into the ‘public charge rule’ which is supposed to prevent any alien from relying upon the public purse. Comb the data at SSA, Medicaid and every other Federally run or subsidised ‘welfare’ program both direct and indirect. If a particular State is scamming the system to illegally grant benefits to aliens then charge, arrest and prosecute the folks doing it.
With no legal employment, no legal access to Uncle Sugar’s largesse and vigorous prosecution of anyone attempting to skirt those prohibitions they gonna find it far more difficult to remain in the USA. I suppose all the virtue signaling wokiestas with ‘In this house we believe no one is illegal’ signs in the yard could actually demonstrate their commitment by digging deep in their own pockets to fund these folks stay…but the wokiestas probably won’t.

In the abstract I agree, let’s get rid of the abuses with Civil Asset forfeiture …..but until that happens and it remains a tool in the toolbox let’s use that tool to assist in getting perhaps 25 million illegal aliens out of the USA. It wouldn’t break my heart to see civil asset forfeiture used against the folks who willingly, knowingly or even ‘a wink and a nod unknowingly’ employed cheap easily exploited illegal alien labor instead of hiring US Citizens which put businesses that played by the rules at a severe disadvantage putting some of them out of business due to illegal practices. This has gone on for decades. It must stop and if civil asset forfeiture gets the attention of the scoff law bad actor employers who’ve gotten away with this for decades enough to create a meaningful deterrent…good. At least it will finally be used for the benefit of average US Citizens.

The increase in average hourly wages may be a mirage if you cut a million workers off near the bottom end of the wage range. The rest may all be making the same.
We have no idea if 1,000,000 left the country, all we know is that they left the workforce. The workforce where the employers reported it, how many just dropped off the books and are working under the table or are just afraid of deportation so are hiding out at friends and relatives for a bit?
