HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Orders Review of Abortion Pill Safety

This week has been busy for Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
First, he gave a masterclass in how to respond to inane Democratic “gotcha” questions.
He followed this action up by directing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a comprehensive review of the abortion pill mifepristone, citing new evidence of safety concerns.
This decision was announced during a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee hearing, where Kennedy referenced a recent study by the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) that reported higher rates of serious adverse events associated with mifepristone than previously indicated by FDA labeling.
“It’s alarming,” RFK Jr. said of a recent study conducted by the Ethics & Public Policy Center that found nearly 11% of women who used the popular abortion pill mifepristone experienced a “serious adverse event.”
“I have asked Marty Makary, who is the director at FDA, to do a complete review and report back,” the HHS secretary revealed during a Senate Health, Labor, Education and Pensions Committee hearing.
The Ethics & Public Policy Center study – the “largest-known” on the abortion pill – analyzed insurance claims data from 865,727 prescribed mifepristone abortions between 2017 and 2023.
The study found 10.93% of women experience sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or another serious adverse event within 45 days following a mifepristone abortion.
It must be noted that mifepristone, often used in combination with misoprostol for medical abortion, has been associated with rare but serious cases of sepsis. Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to an infection becomes extreme and starts to damage its own tissues and organs instead of just fighting the infection. This overactive immune response triggers widespread inflammation, which can lead to tissue damage, organ dysfunction, and, if not treated quickly, death.
While the overall risk is extremely low, at least 32 fatalities have been reported as of 2022. But what is even more staggering is the fact the same report indicates 5.9 million women have taken this drug.

Of course, abortion supporters swooped down to support the pharmaceutical product.
“Well, the good news is, scientists have studied the safety of mifepristone for over 25 years, and the evidence is crystal clear: Mifepristone and medication abortion is safe and effective,” Kelly Baden, the vice president for public policy at the Guttmacher Institute, said in a video statement. She added that the organization’s researchers found that medication abortion accounted for nearly two-thirds of all U.S. abortions in 2023.
Mifepristone is safe when used as directed, according to the Food and Drug Administration, which continues to “closely monitor” the postmarketing safety data on mifepristone.
Democrats are also in hysterics about the order, especially erstwhile 2028 presidential aspirant California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Newsom criticized Kennedy’s request as being based not on scientific evidence but on politically motivated misinformation. The push stems from claims made by the Ethics & Public Policy Center, a conservative think tank known for its longstanding opposition to reproductive rights. Despite more than two decades of clinical data and a well-documented safety record, Kennedy is seeking a reevaluation of the drug’s approval status.
“This is yet another attack on women’s reproductive freedom and scientifically-reviewed health care from an HHS Secretary who just yesterday said in a Senate hearing: ‘I don’t think people should be taking medical advice from me,’” Newsom said in a statement. “California will continue to protect every person’s right to make their own medical decisions and help ensure that mifepristone is available to those who need it.”

Given what happened related to the COVID-19 vaccine, another look at all the science and data is warranted…especially in the area of reproductive health for women. The Big Pharma-Big Government-Big Media complex cannot be trusted, and its “science” is not trustworthy unless it can be validated or replicated.

Though I hope that kennedy goes through all the hoops to get Mifepristone off the market.
It was found safe (? which was BS) during a prior administration and therefore there are a lot of hoops required to show the prior safety approval as junk science

May I give a physician’s perspective? I have treated young women who took mifepristone for a “chemical” abortion (e.g. versus a “surgical” abortion), and the adverse events related to the drug are NOT to be dismissed. I have admitted young teenage girls for serious dehydration from vomiting, bleeding, and for other adverse events related to the use of the combination chemical abortion prescription drugs (Mifepristone/Misoprostol) to the point where they were hospitalized for a week for IV rehydration, restoration of blood counts, and approval from OB/GYN to go home. It’s not the “just take these, go to sleep and you’ll be baby-free and smiling” situation that Planned Death talks about. The other drug, misoprostol, has its own adverse event profile that I won’t even talk about, but it’s just as serious. These are the facts that made FDA require that these drugs require a prescription and why so many states say they CANNOT be prescribed or dispensed except in person.

We all drive cars and accept the risk of an accident, physical harm or possible death. Insurance just mitigates the losses and not erases them.

Kennedy should just recommend that mifepristone/misoprostol should revert back to the original FDA REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy) requirements and eliminate the changes that were implemented during the covid pandemic that greatly increased the access to the chemical abortion drugs. That would go a long way to preventing the incredibly serious complications that can and do occur when using this drug combination.

I generally agree with you but, even without any act of Congress, the executive branch has a role in arresting anyone who performs those mutilations as they are crimes. The list of charges in such acts should be gargantuan, and among some of the worst crimes imaginable.
Personally, I have been shocked that no teachers or administrators have been arrested for their sexual preying on children or for their facilitation of sexual predation of young girls, especially in locker rooms and bathrooms. Those “policies” are clearly criminal.

The big lie is the procedure is safe.
However, with more than a 10% serious adverse reaction, clearly there are risks. Furthermore, there are women dying each year as a result of this procedure.
Instead of educating woman so they can have informed consent, the abortion industry lies and says the procedure is safe.
Personal story: My teenage daughter had to have oral surgery performed by a dentist and was provided with a consent that one of the side effects of the anesthesia was death. She refused the anesthesia and took a local instead.
